I have been for some time just left the bike out in the street however I have been offered a council garage 100 yards up the road.

But it comes in at £47 a month which i feel is a lot but taking into account of somewhere to store random stuff the insurance policy may be less and general wear and tear on the bike .

Would you do this if you had no garage and the bike is used year round?

Yes.
In a heartbeat.
Surprising how useful they are for storage of other stuff (hint, hooks on walls and suspended from ceiling helps).
Plus atm I'd love a place where it's dry to work on the bike.

Power may be an issue but you can pick up generators for next to nothing just to provide some light.

Obviously being council you don't want too obvious security on the outside. The Autolok stoppa locks you fit on the inside mentioned in another thread sound like a good idea.

Also thinking about security for the garage/bike one of the pager type alarms (like this one for £80) may be of interest.

HTH Thumbs Up

<edit>
Just seen your location in the Profile.
I suspect security may not be as much of an issue as south of Watford or any city.

well one of the reasons i am giving myself is my son can out his bike in it and also i can start doing my own maintenance on the bike

for a rough idea the next job i have to do is oil and filter change what would a garage charge for this as in time?

Doesn't matter how much money it's worth, how much is it worth to you to be without it?
You mention using all year. Therefore may be a bit inconvenient/expensive to use public transport or get a replacement.

Basic service, oil/filter change I'd expect about an hours labour charge, say about £40 to £50 depending on the garage/location. For some main dealers you might have to double that though (depending on the bike/model/dealer)

there are also other applications of a garage... my missus has been tied up in mine for ages Twisted Evil

regardless of your bikes value its always gunna be beter off somewhere where it can atleast dry over night. Recently i changed an entire wiring loom on a 3 year old R6 simply because the owner had been parking it on the road from new... ok so he wasnt covering it up either, but you get the gist.

Well worth it IMHO.
Do you have any mates you could share it with?
Four of us shared a council garage years back, it got whittled down to just me after a few years, but still worth it I thought.

If you want to do work on your own bike, definitely worth it I reckon. Saves a lot of hassle as you don't have to panic if it starts to rain etc, nevermind leaving your bike in bits over night.
Then there' having all your tools next to the bike ready to go.

Could consider a couple of long extension leads. Two lots of 50m if you can get away with it.

If you can secure it yes, it makes life so much easier, can you not haggle the price?.

My SV is probably worth £1500 on a good day, and i wouldn't dream of not having a garage to let her sleep in!!!!!

infact - i've made a point of only ever living in houses which have garages!

I did ask the estate agent to only send me details of garages with a house attached.
For some reason they still sent details of mid-terraced, no rear access ones Evil or Very Mad

I keep my Derbi in one. If it wasn't for that garage my bike still wouldn't be done. But it is.

Walls are painted and we have got two lights running on a car battery. When it dies, charge it. No petrol or anything needed and you wont choke to death when the door is shut.

But yes, definately worth it.

I am friends with a few people down there so if anyone was to break it they would lend a hand. And there are like 4 houses at the end of the section where the garages are and mine is on the end. One of the houses has 2 fuck off dogs and a security light on so if anyone was to try and break in they would be in full view and with 2 massive dogs barking them.

You get the point.

Also you say you are sharing yours with your son. I share mine with my dad. I pay half so its about £4 per week. For the first 15 weeks it was £2 per week Shocked

I think it was about 5yrs ago when my council upped the garage rents by 200%.
I'm on a waiting list. I suspect my great great grandchildren will enjoy it.

Well Im on a paper round and pay for it so when he turns 13 get him to pay for it with some of his funds. Failing that just be a loving father and pay his share Very Happy

With the lights not to sure as my dad 'made' them but I think they are just 12 volt lights and obviously a car battery. It has jump start lead type connections, only smaller, and the wiring is a mess but hopefully we can think of a way to hide it.

Garage is pretty basic atm but in the future it should be good. White walls, carpet or similar on the floor (oil and old vinyl on there now) then workbench at the back with space for hanging tools and stuff.

This is the sort of thing. Very similar actually but a lot older as its from when he used to have a garage down there when he lived with my mum (few garages up actually Laughing)

I want a double garage. Its likely to cost me about £3-4K, or £50-60 a month over five years.
A single would be about £2K, or £30ish a month on credit.
So on that basis, £47 a month would seem a bit steep.
But I already own the land that would be underneath it.
Bought my house of the council ten years ago when the rent was roughly £200 a month, on a mortgate that costs about £250. So to me, best part of £50 a month is one fifth of my mortgage... making it seem VERY high. But, its all dependent.
What are property prices like in your area? Thats the first thing. Next is the demand for lock-ups. Some areas where the houses dont have thier own garages, and theres little or no off-street parking, demand is higher. So it may be a perfectly reasonable rent.
But whether its worth it, TO YOU, only you can answer.
Its, nearly £600 a year. Thats probably the entire value of my bike, and I'd probably not save more than twenty quid on the insurance, so financially it wouldn't make much difference, to me at least.
For you, if you have a high insurance premium, and a more valuable bike, might be bigger savings, but unlikely they'd be big enough to justify the entire rent.
Even the ability to work in the dry and DIY more of your own maintenence wont really off-set much more of the cost, so really it comes down to how much use you'll get from it, how convenient it is, and whether it vastly improves the quality of your life!
I'm sat here typing this with a Honda Super-Dream four feet from my elbow, a drum brake on my record player! a speedo unit resting on the back of the chair above me, and a CB750 clutch on the windowsill next to me!
I REALLY want a garage!
It would vastly improve my enviroment!
But, only you can decide if its worth the money to you.

I knocked my old garage down, just to build a bigger one.

I'd be lost without it.
