Hello and welcome.
At 17 you will be restricted to 33bhp for 2 years (after completing the test on a 125cc bike).
I use a combination of cheap engine oil and a spray on wax for my chain, i usually change the engine oil and filter every 5000 miles.
Good luck and keep us informed on how you get along. ____________________ Suzuki GSF600 K3 (in the fastest colour, black). |

Hi Brandon, welcome to the adventure.
I'd suggest that you not rush into it. Get your provisional, do your 1-day CBT course, and see how you feel about it. There's a lot to cover in one 1 day and it can be very intimidating to go on the road if you've got no prior experience - or even if you do.
After you've got your CBT, you can ride a 125 up to 11kW/14hp solo with L plates.
You can have plenty of fun on a 125, they're really easy to sell on, and the insurance and running costs are low. So I'd suggest that unless you're dead set on getting onto a bigger bike ASAP that you get a 125 and ride it for a bit.
Once you've got some experience and confidence, you can do an A2 test on your own 125 which gets you your "A (restricted)" license. No need to get training or go via a training school, although some roadcraft can't hurt.
The other option is to skip buying your own 125, and go straight from the CBT to paid training for the A2 test on a 125.
Depending on the area, training school, and your aptitude, that'll run to several days (2, 3, 4 or more), at around £150 a day. It can add up pretty quickly, and there's still the test fees (around £35 theory, £15 mod 1, £85 mod 2) to pay.
Either way, once you have your "A (restricted)" you can get a bike with any engine size and up to 25kW (33hp). You can get a bigger bike and get it restricted, but you'll likely get hammered on the insurance if you do that at your age.
The Ninja 250 is indeed a good choice for A (restricted) licenses, although there are licensing changes coming which means you'll want to sell it on before 2013.
Best of luck, and if you have any questions, give us a shout. |

Whilst the Ninja is a sexy looking bike I really wouldn't recommend it as a first bike.
It's going to be a question of when you drop the bike not if. When you drop that lovely green paintwork down the road and crack a fairing it's going to be a world of pain and expense getting it repaired. The riding position is also fairly sports orientated and not the easiest for noobs to get the hang of.
As said get a cheap 125 for some experience then sell it on for the same price and get the bike of your dreams.
But then it's your money
