Ok guys I've been offered a vivarium with 2 beardy's in. I've always fancied having one but never looked too deeply at what it entails, can anyone let me in on the good and bad bits of keeping please Thumbs Up

My Mrs keeps one, Dave the Beardy.
I dont know a great deal about the upkeep, as she tends to look after him. All I do know is that they can be finicky to look after, require precise temps, bulbs, space etc to keep them in good health.
Also, I remember something about not being able to keep them in a viv together. Male + Male = Fighting, Male + Female = Bullied, constantly pregnant Female.

As most of that is a bit sketchy, If you havn't had any more help, Ill ask the Mrs to provide some decent info when she gets in from work, about 10pm.

Take it easy

Sounds like a couple of males to me, but like I said, the wife is the font of knowledge on this one.
Our viv is a big wooden, freestanding thing. Its 4ft high coz they like climbing apparently, lots of branches for him to explore.
Eats mostly fruits and veg, but no iceberg lettuce, its bad for them, and they get addicted. Has bugs once or twice a week, keeps him fit hunting them.
Thats about the fullest extent of my knowledge, so Ill get the wife to give some more precise info later, also she frequents a forum dealing with these things, not sure if its just Beardies or Reptiles as a whole, Ill get here to post a link for it.

Think carefully whether you really want them. They don't really do much and they can be a bit smelly even if you look after them well.I've lost interest in ours but they are mainly for the girlfriend who loves them.

Not that expensive to keep. We give our 2 a bag of kale or spring greens about every 10 days (£1 from supermarket) and a tub of crickets (£2.20) a week. Babies eat just crickets, Teens about 50/50 and adults mainly veg.

A tub of calcuim powder (£5) that lasts over a year. Floor the viv with kitchen roll when young and sand when older (£3 for big bag from Argos). UV bulb needs replacing every 6-8 months (£20-30). Plus the extra electricity from having the heatmat, heating bulb and uv bulb on 12h a day.

If you need anymore information on them, just give me a message with what you want to know.

I have a fairly good knowledge of them.

Very easy pets to keep. Can be a smelly after they do a shite but if you have sand, just wait until it goes crusty and sieve the sand and the smell is gone. When they get older they can be a bit expensive to keep. Elliott (one of the dragons in the house) is almost a year old and goes through a box of crickets a day (£2.50).

We have been breading mice because it is too expensive when all the costs are added up:

4 Dragons x £2.50 per day = About £70 per week

+ Electricity bills (4 very large vivariums).

If it is 2 males you have chances are they will start nipping each others tails (thats how they fight). Check their back toes and tail before you buy them. If any are missing then you will need to seperate them.

If you need to check if they are males or females, have a look under them for small dots running along their legs.

Once I submit this post I will have a look for pictures online to show you what I mean.

This is when Elliott was a baby:
https://i1.bebo.com/052b/5/large/2010/01/16/21/1479849292a12106668579l.jpgHe was less than 11 grams

He is called Stumpy because he has 3 and a half legs, half a foot and half a tail (bought him like that).

I’ve got two (almost 7 years old now!)
They are fairly robust reptiles, social animals and easy to keep. They’ll be easier to keep as adults. I’ll fire some of the basics at you on here, ask anything you want.

I feed my two fresh veg as much as possible in the week. They don’t eat certain fruit and veg, the information is readily available on the net. But keep it simple...too many people have too many opinions on the right foods. They really only need a few items. It’s best to buy a book (got mine from Amazon)

I feed them tomato’s, baby corn, runner beans, sweet corn (mine love sweet corn) and curly kale. Curly kale is a staple food, the rest in moderation.
You want to avoid things that build calcium up in them, like spinach.
Get yourself a tub of the calcium powder and just sprinkle a little every other meal (stops them developing bone problems when they’re older). My two get through about 30 hoppers a week, i buy them in bags of 50 for £10.

As for the viv, yes they love climbing, i let my two out in my room quite a bit. Generally keep one side really warm, the other side cooler. I have a spot lamp one end of my viv with a heat mat on the other. Often I don’t have the mat on but in winter I pop it on for a few hours at a time.
The florescent tube light needs to be changed every 6 months, this is a source of vitamins so don’t forget about it. If you don’t know the age of the one you have when you get it, change it.
I bath my two every 2-3 weeks, it keeps them clean and can help with their digestive tract (e.g they shit in the bath because it’s warm)lol. My two love bath time, i have a large plastic box for them to swim about in. Slightly warm water, not hot.

Apart from that it’s about talking to other owners and people in your local reptile shop. Don’t be pressured into anything though because sometimes they like to give you advice that leads to a couple hundred spent in the shop. Laughing

Here’s my two!

Cheers guys just what I wanted to hear really. I realise they are gonna cost money to keep etc and I'm fairly certain I will either give one of them away as the lady who has them says they fight as soon as the light is on (so she keeps them in the dark Shocked or seperated when its on).
They are free and complete with the viv etc so I will have them no matter what to start with but obviously I want to do the best I can to keep them healthy etc..
not sure on their age yet will know more tonite Thumbs Up
I'm sure I wil be back with more questions soon lol..
oh do they like water? like to swim in etc

You can put a bowl of shallow water in the viv if you like but instead of drinking it they'll probably just shit in it. They get their water from the veg. As killa said, they like a bath every so often but only shoulder height water.

Yup.
They don’t want it too deep. And because anything you hold water in can be a bit slippy you could have some kind of log for them to hold on to. Some of them freak out a little. Thumbs Up

Ok I got em yesterday.. the viv is smaller that tey said but is 3x2x2 and ok. I am going to give the one away as it constantly picks on the other when the uv light is on..(or maybe get another viv if I can find one cheap enough)
they are 4 years old and she has been keeping them on cat litter Shocked and feeding roaches.
I just been to get some play sand and am going to get a decent smoothish basking stone as they only have a rock from a fish tank by the looks of it and a big piece of wood. pics later when i can get them off my phone Mr. Green
chuffed so far and even the missus likes them (oh and the 2 collies dont seem to mind them either)
I am thinking that at 4 years old they should be having veg as a main food and roaches as a supplement Question
cheers guys

Do these things bite, and does it hurt? Like the look of them and the viv would make a nice focal point but they look kinda nasty, like they don't want to be bothered, and thats a shit load of teeth to be messing with!

I’ve not known a Beardy to bite just because.
The only times I’ve been nipped is when i have had to hand feed a few things and been a bit slow with my fingers. But seriously that’s like twice in about 7 years.
They might look a little mincing but really, they aren’t. Thumbs Up
