Seems that South Korea was test firing artillary into the ocean and North Korea took that as a hostile act.
Although both claim rights to the island in question ____________________ Suzuki GSF600 K3 (in the fastest colour, black). |

It's nothing new really, been going on for years.
Spy subs dropping commandos off with a mission to get to the Blue House (curfew for everyone), massive tunnels under the border for a tank invasion of Seoul, propaganda blaring out over massive speakers across the border, one-upmanship over flags etc
Shame really, as they are a nation/race seperated by the lunacy of politics. ____________________ Space Monkey #7

I recommend that everyone reads this, i think it's a pretty typical indication of what dealing with the north koreans is like:
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Axe_murder_incident
I like this bit:
| Quote: | In addition, a 64-man ROK special forces company accompanied them, armed with clubs and trained in Tae Kwon Do, supposedly without firearms. However, once they parked their trucks near the Bridge of No Return, they started throwing out the sandbags that lined the truck bottoms, and handing out M-16 rifles and M-79 grenade launchers that had been concealed below.[2] Several of the special forces men also had Claymore mines strapped to their chests with the firing mechanism in their hands, and were shouting at the North Koreans to cross the bridge.[11][12]
A U.S. infantry company in 20 utility helicopters and 7 Cobra attack helicopters circled behind them. Behind these helicopters, B-52 bombers escorted by U.S. F-4 fighters from Kunsan Air Base and ROK F-5 fighters were visible flying across the sky at high altitude. At Taegu Air Base, F-111F bombers of the 430th TFS out of Mountain Home AFB, were stationed. The aircraft carrier Midway task force had also been moved to a station just offshore. In addition, near the edges of the DMZ, many more heavily armed U.S. and ROK infantry, artillery (which included the 2nd Bn/71st ADA (HAWK) in the 2ID/ICorps area), and armor were waiting to back up the special operations team. The bases near the DMZ were prepared for demolition in the case of a military response. The defense condition (DEFCON) was elevated on order of Gen. Stillwell, as recounted in Col. De LaTeur's research paper later. In addition, 12,000 additional troops were ordered to Korea, including 1,800 Marines from Okinawa.[6]
Altogether, Task Force Vierra consisted of 813 men: almost all of the men of the United States Army Support Group, of which the Joint Security Force was a part; a ROK reconnaissance company; a ROK Special Forces company which had infiltrated the river area by the bridge the night before; and members of a reinforced composite rifle company from the 9th Infantry Regiment. In addition to this force, every UNC force in the rest of South Korea was on battle alert. |
That's quite a force to go cut down a tree!
Kim Jong-un is just doing what he has to. If he weren't ordering such things his father would have somebody else lined up for succession and have them doing it instead. I just hope once daddy's death and he's in charge he uses his power to get information on the wider world and becomes a rational and sensible leader unlike his dad. |

It could be argued that the US forces 'caused' the incident - IIRC any activity in the JSA should've been done with mutual consent, my understanding is that the US forces acted without this mutual consent.
Ok, hacking someone to death with an axe over the 'illegal' felling of a tree is a relatively 'over the top' response by normal standards - but, they were in the middle of a fucking war zone and should really have known better. Think of it as a 'cultural misunderstanding' - arrogant America meets crazy Korean commies.
The Panmunjom tour takes you past the site of the massacre (and the plaque), i seem to recall we weren't allowed to stop there the day i went for some 'security' reason or other. ____________________ Space Monkey #7

All the sources i've seen have said that the work was previously mutually agreed. The North decided at the last minute that the trees had been planted by the dear leader and were not to be touched. I think it was just the north taking advantage of a grey area to be the one to call the shots, or as an excuse for violence. If you read the norths statements on the recant attacks they blame the south for starting things and claim to be defending themselves against aggressors:
The South Korean enemy, despite our repeated warnings, committed reckless military provocations of firing artillery shells into our maritime territory near Yeonpyeong island beginning 1300 (0400 GMT), The North will strike back if South Korea "dares to invade our sea territory by 0.001mm", it warned.
Mostly it's just chest beating on behalf of the north, but i think in the axe murder incident they went as far as they possibly could and backed down short of all out war as they secretly know it's unwinnable for them.
The main thing protecting DPRK was China, but recently US - china have agreed more and more than the north is acting unacceptably. China would never accept a US occupation of the north, neither would the US after Iraq and Afghanistan, similarly i don't think the chinese would want to get involved. However if the north used nuclear weapons on the south i would expect to see a massive non nuclear strike against the north by the americans, one china would probably accept. |

Interesting documentary into North Korea:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=RG4gL3eAHVs
I watched it on the VBS.tv website a year or so ago. But I can't get all the parts to play on their website anymore. So had to youtube it for the first one. Tis interesting. ____________________ Past: Honda x8rs, Honda City fly, Honda Hornet 250, Honda VFR750, Yamaha xt600e.

Neither of the Koreas are independent in their actions - it's a US-China duet.

I dunno, i think i'd definitely avoid saying something like that
Like i said she's a candidate to be the next president and seems to have a way with words similar to the last one, so her odds are probably good |
