Got on the bike this morning, got ten minutes down the road and my front drum brake started making a "clank clank clank" noise that got faster / slower with the bike.

Pulling the brake caused the noise to be replaced with a rubbing noise. Lever was dead tight, then when you pull it again feels normal, then dead tight again...

Limped back to the house and I have to get to work so won't have time to investigate further till tonight (I'm not riding it till its sorted obviously! Taking the bicycle Twisted Evil )

Just wondered if anyone else has experienced similar?

It came on suddenly after a few speed bumps so I don't think its a sticking brake cable. Broken brake shoe maybe?[/i]

Could be anything, you'll need to take it apart. My guess would be that the friction material has detached itself from the shoe.

Drum Brakes are relatively simple the hardest part will be getting the wheel off.

front wheels arent too bad though. With the right tools you'll have it off in a couple of minutes. And its drum, its the cunt disc brakes which are annoying to get back on to the discs. My pistons never want to go back in, probably because my calipers are full cack

Report it to the council; The speed bumps have caused damaged your vehicle!

Unless ofcourse you were hammering it, trying to get some air when you hit them. Then it's your own fault. Laughing

And the winner is:

The lower spring has snapped.

And now a stupid question - is it safe to ride with just the one spring? I'm assuming the only issue might be some rubbing?

The remaining spring is at the top, where the pivot (or cam?) Turns and pushes the shoes out.

The broken spring was on the bottom, where there isn't the same amount of movement.

I wouldn't, buy some new shoes they aren't expensive and come with springs. You could probably get a spring on it's own from an independent dealer for pence.

Its not really the cost, more just impatience as id like to commute on the bike for the rest of the week.

Going to order some new shoes anyway as the current ones are on their way out and id like to try some EBC ones rather than the pattern ones in there, see if there's any improvement!

So they def come with the springs? Cos I can't find them for sale anywhere!

My RXS ones did, I posted the pattern ones because I assumed the reason you wasn't going to do it was cost. It is one of the most common bikes in the world I dare say any bike shop would stock them.

Didn't mean to sound like I was turning my nose up at the idea of pattern parts - the whole bike only cost me £200 after all lol

I wasn't sure if they came with springs or not just because the pictures on wemoto don't show the springs :s

I'm only considering the EBC shoes on the off chance they might improve the brakes a tad - they aren't the most confidence inspiring, and the EBC's are only £3 more

I guess I could buy the shoes locally but I'm lazy and buy most things online these days!

I know it's a pita to be off the road waiting for parts, but personally I don't think you should ride it. Knowingly riding a bike with faulty brakes cannot possibly be passed off as a good idea; especially if you were unfortunate enough to be involved in an accident in that time.

Awk I know its a stoopid idea, ill just leave it!

Didn't really consider that the lower spring would prevent the shoes jumping about when I hit bumps etc!

Sounds exactly like what happens on a car when the shoes are gone.
