Hi,I've had my bike 6mths now and alls been fine.....winters set in and now i seem to be having problems. She took a fall in high winds and brake handle bent and tank has a dent but seemed fine..now she wont go above 50mph and it feels like the engine spultters// saw in the mirrors a massive puff of smoke then it ran fine.....parked up and the next day it was like somebody had taken half the engine power away. what could it be???
grateful for any help

could be a lot of things. check the air filter hasn't dislodged and cutting the air flow. Also check there isn't a tight bend in your fuel pipe.

falling that i would be at a loss. The smoke your saw was some oil passing your rings as the bike was sitting on it's side!

Is the choke handlebar operated or on the carb? Carrying on from rob yarrr idea, I think you might have a snagged choke cable (if it is operated from the bars).

Not sure on the Vara, but if the engine crank case breather pipe leads into the airbox, it could be the air filter is now oil soaked from being sat on its side?

This could lead to a VERY rich mix (and an oily one explaining the smoke?)

Worth a look?

Regards
Rob

Choke on full, start bike. Then reduce the choke bit by bit until it will idle without choke.

The bike may be suffering from carb icing , if it is a carbed model. Thumbs Up

Carb icing, is caused by the cold, the air freezes in the carb and stops the fuel and air from mixing.

Signs of this are engine cutting out when reducing revs (as in coming to a junction) and the bike feel like it is running on less cylinders.

It depends on what the problem is.

Do you reduce the choke after the bike has started? Do you reduce and eventually turn the choke off completely?

Would also make your plugs black and run like the choke is stuck on (even though you have turned it off)

I still think its worth checking inside the airbox for an oil soaked air filter..

Black sooted up plug = running rich

a wet plug (wetted by oil or fuel) IHMO belongs in the bin
They are cheap enough to bung a fresh one in without breaking the bank
Once wetted they NEVER run quite the same -
(I chased "troubles" on an engine I was running and had converted to electronic ignition and unfortunately for me the plugs were the last thing I got round to changing - which cost me a fortune and weeks of headscratching/swapping bits and rewiring everything that didn't need doing for the sake of £10 of plugs which solved everything instantly- I also chucked the foam sock filters away that covered the carbs - as it was those getting sucked into the carb mouths causing the wetting of the plugs in the first place)

I would also say that carb icing is unlikely as my only other experience of it resulted in the carbs spitting back due to an overly weak mixture rather than over rich mix

Oil level is a 2 second 1 handed job to test for - so do it!
Unscrew the filler plug, wipe the oil off the dipstick pop the dipstick back in (don't screw it in, just let gravity do the work)
Pull it out...now wheres the oil level showing the hi tide mark?
If its whithin the hashed area you know it hasn't been overfilled

(typing this would have taken longer than doing it)

As for wrong type of oil...as long as the stuff you poured in/topped up with's bottle said "oil" on the side its the right stuff for a CG*

(OK so there maybe some oils like penetrating oil which would be less suitable than any other fluid)

Regards
Rob

If it is carb icing you might find 1 - 2% Silkolene Pro - FST added to your fuel tank will prevent it happening, worked for me on my 1cyl 650cc, you can pick it up at most dealer's for around £10/litre
