Currently joined the resistance at Plymouth uni, we're occupying a nice big room and its pretty fun...

Apart from all the normal protesty stuff, I feel like there's valuable skills to be learnt from protesting...

For instance getting a group of 20-30 people to all sit down and agree on issues, then act on them... If nothing else it's getting a good education in negotiation, especially as our organisation is very loose with no leaders...

Personally I don't think this protest will reduce cuts as such (although that isn't really in our demands), but as the chance arose I thought I'd get involved in some govt fighting, rather than just run my mouth on here... Laughing

Whereas most people are complaining at sleeping on the floor with loads of people etc, I love it! Beats sleeping in a cold garage and the whole atmosphere with lots of people and activity is awesome. We're also hosting debates and film showings (I got Money as Debt in there Wink ) and generally making good use of our time and our occupied space.

Any other stories of rebel fun?

Friends walked around Bristol, some signs saying "First Dobby, now this!".

Seems a bit fruitless to me, I am with Itchy in the way that unless some people grab some RPGs and Kalashnikovs, I can't see much changing.

Yeah I agree, suprisingly though I seem to be a bit of an extremist among the guys there whenever proper rebellion gets mentioned....

"Freedom is bought in blood" and "if peaceful protest got results, it wouldn't be legal" are two phrases that get heard a lot.

Fee's go up 300%, only those effected protest. That's normal, however because they are all young people their either branded as clueless, lazy, complaining for the sake of it, no knowledge of the real world etc. If they get violent they get dismissed as yobs and the news coverage becomes about violent yobs, rather than the actual opposition to the issue.

Think about this, if VAT / Income tax / Council tax were going up 300% the streets would be littered with burning cars and dead policemen, and peoples reaction would just be "well what do you expect if you do something THAT unpopular?!".

Lets be honest. many of them don't have much knowledge of the real world.

Lets be honest about the fee increase too - they're certainly going up, but there's no upfront costs as there were for my generation (we only had to pay £1100, but you didn't get your loan until you paid it, and only the poorest got grants) and the loan/fees are spread out over decades of your working life, depending on your future salary. The debts don't appear on credit checks and thus don't affect your ability to get mortgages or bank accounts in the future. The new scheme means that a student earning my wages would pay far less per month than I do - albeit over a longer period of time - making it far more affordable.

That's how life works mate - if you want something you can't afford, you have to get it on credit or do without.

If it were 20 or 30 years ago, and Uni really was the preserve of the best and brightest, then the protesters might have a point. Instead we had Bliar who decided that everyone should go to uni - which kinda defeated the point.

Simply put, the country doesn't need legions of media studies/drama/golf studies/sports science graduates - so it's decided it isn't going to pay for them any more.

Bearing in mind policemen pay income tax, council tax and VAT I don't think they'd be pulling out the stops to crush a revolt against THAT government!

Loads of schools where I work had impromptu walkouts, fire alarms set off, mass indiscipline, etc. Some of them have probably persuaded themselves they care about the issue, but most just saw the opportunity to get a day off school with precious little comeback. Fair play to them, we've all done it and probably for far flakier reasons!

I'm surprised the protest is in Smeaton, I'd be expecting it more to be in the art block Laughing

Also, if you want to occupy a big space in Smeaton, why not the project lab on the top floor? Wink

Should they not be at school, making the most of the 'free' education us taxpayers are paying for?

Read that in a posh James Blunt type voice and couldn't read the rest of your post. Laughing "The resistance" just sounds so camp and overused, you should've went with "Cheetah fuckers", then at least someone will notice you for 5 seconds.

Fees go up and students protest about paying back their own fees (now or, more likely, later). They would rather the taxpayer pay the fees. Unfortunately, so may people go to university these days that it is no longer a meritocracy for the truly intellectual - it costs a fortune and it's a waste of time for many. Despite that, most people who go to university will probably end up as taxpayers rather than live on benefits, and those that do good degrees have a higher chance of a larger income and will therefore pay more tax. Remind me who the students want to pay the fees again?

The options are:

1) You pay your own fees
2) You pay everybody elses fees

Nothing is ever free.

(1) is a good idea if you are a traditional student, you will save money
(2) is good for those doing Lady GaGa studies, having a laugh for 3 years, and not expecting to make anything of it

Sure sure, except they want people to pay twice... as you say...

Myself I've paid well in excess of 27K in taxes. And that is on a modest salary too. And you're asking people to pay another 27K as well! So nothing is free so paying for it is fine, unless you are asked twice.

Kind of life pensions I am severely resentful paying for pensions now when by 2050 there will be no such thing.

I completely agree and think that's a decent decision, but they're not just targetting those degrees. The new way that the loans get paid back makes those who earn more pay the most back, so surely that's penalising those who do more sensible courses and get a career after uni to pay for those who went to uni to study something useless and won't get a job out of it.

The funding cuts is hitting all departments so it's going to effect all the useful degrees as much as the useless ones.

I think the main problem is that people think that they should be able to study what they like at uni just for the 'uni expirence' of getting pissed and being lazy, In reality uni's exist to train people to meet a national of global need for skills, if there's no demand for the skills, why should there be hundreds of courses in them?

When i say this to people they take the attitude of "Well your just saying that because what you wanted to study is useful and you don't want your department to be cut", but i chose to do my degree based on the fact that there were jobs at the end of it.

I know soooo many people who have done english literature degrees expecting there to be a queue of employers waiting to hire them once they'd graduated. All of them now work jobs they could have got without a degree in bars and stuff. All eventually realise they're wasting their degree and decide to do a PGCE and go into teaching. 95% of them have been shocked to find that all the places are taken by allt he others doing exactly the same thing Laughing

So far I haven't seen any of these (and other similar) protesters actually offering any kind of solution.

Some don't really acknowledge there's a 'problem' with the economy that is causing the problem. Others seem to think the MPs, who get the wage of maybe someone running a company with 10-50 employees, should somehow pay for it all themselves. Ignoring these for the totally stupidity they display...
I don't see anyone saying "put taxes up even more than they are going to be put up", "cut even more public sector jobs" or "cut winter fuel allowance".

From what I understand - the fact that over the last thirty years a lot more people have been attending university and having a lot of it paid for by the state is no doubt a contributing factor to why our country is in the mess it is.
Just because others have had it free when times were good, does not mean, to my mind, that people now should be able to continue that.

And no, I didn't go to Uni, but did manage still to get a job a Uni-lever would have and progress similarly (or better than quite a lot I know) at a similar age. Can the state pay for me to doss for a few years now? Wink

As per Mister James - I don't know how much is in place, but it would be nice to see courses funded more for areas we need - perhaps paid on graduation or even when a job is held for a while (so they didn't disappear off to somewhere more lucrative). There was a scheme like that running for teachers, not sure if it still is.

As for paying taxes - that's fine if you don't use any other public services at all and totally rescind your rights to anything the framework may offer (emegency ambulances, etc.)

Either way it's only the geeky and loser students who aren't playing sport/getting drunk on a Wednesday afternoon... the day that the protest in London was.

Err...unless I am mistaken, your monthly repayments are dependent on your income, yes. But your outstanding balance remains. So in essence, all that happens is that the people earning more money (i.e. the ones that did the sensible degrees) pay the loan off quicker and don't get hit with as much interest as those on a lower salary.

I couldn't give a shit really about it...as I'm convinced this country will have very little to offer the world in the next few decades and this will only be compounded by the fact that lot's of people can't afford the degrees necessary to keep our economy competitive.

Why do these people want a degree?
To earn money.

Why did I learn to drive a car?
To be able to go to a job to earn money.

Why did I pay for the extra courses i have been on over the years?
To earn money.

So why do the want a degree for free or at a cut down price?

Because they are money grabbing skanks.

If you want it either pay for it or pay for it. Nothing is free and why should I pay for a service that I do not receive, with others getting that service in order to either get paid more than me or even put me out of a job?

I am paying back my student loans still and I am 30. Ok this is probably not ideal.

However, does it affect my day to day life? No. Does it cause me hardship? Not really. I didn't get a degree but I am in a professional job that could have been obtained with a degree and relevant experience.

Education has to be paid for somehow, and yes how many people do sports science or social policy or carpet design?

Its all very well saying that if tax was increased we'd all be protesting; Tax is being increased, but we aren't. Its not being increased 300% but at the same time we're not getting more favourable payment terms.

The previous government fucked us over by spending over the overdraft limit of the country (including the extraordinarily expensive scrappage scheme for example) and so we need to pay for stuff now.

Nobody protested when the original tuition fees policy was announced...? Maybe because the unions were in the pocket of Zanulabour at the time...? Who knows. What I do know is, the change in policy isn't serious enough to instigate a riot.

Maybe you didn't but I did at the tail end of the 1990s there were some fairly small limited demos in Manchester. I recall standing outside HMV holding a sign. But doing it as an excuse to attempt to get a cute girlie in the sack.
