Stuck for something to buy for my brother, have been reliably informed that this might be the way forwards.

Any thoughts? Only criteria is that it needs to be sourced in the UK, and not mentally expensive (any more than £40/bottle would probably make me cry!)

Ta!

Grey goose?

Not exactly obscure though. Unless by obscure you mean "Not Smirnoff". Laughing

We're in hipster territory with this one, I'm afraid. If he wasn't my brother, I'd have lamped him!

What about 'Zubrowka' ?

It is a Polish vodka made from the grasses from a certain part of the country that wild bison feed from.

It is supposed to be very good. I bought a bottle when I was in Poland last week but haven't drank it yet so I can't comment on how good it actually is at this point in time.

I suppose you will be able to source it in Tesco no doubt since they have a load of Polish stuff in their stores now.

Scorpion Vodka

I love Russian Standard Vodka, it's not bad priced either. Normal Russian Standard being about £17 for 700cl, Platinum being about £20 for 700cl. Plus you can pick it up everywhere.

This last one is a bit of a stretch, but if you decide you love your brother, theres always Grey Goose Vodka. It's ermm yeah £500 a bottle. It is limited edition, a standard bottle is still £100 though.

For £500 I would expect the Vodka to pour itself into a glass and raise it to my mouth for me !!!

And so it fucking should lol. To be honest I think the only difference between the standard and the limited edition is the metal cage. The vodka itself is the same.

How about my personal favourite: Krupnik

It is an ancient Polish liqueur which traces its roots back to the 1300's. As such, it has been a traditional drink in Poland for centuries.

Despite its ancient pedigree, Krupnik's popularity has not faded in Poland, where it commands more than 10 percent of the liqueur market, according to a 1996 poll by the trade journal 'Rynki Alkoholowe'.

The skillful combining of a century-old tradition with modern production methods has produced an excellent liqueur, best drunk warm in the winter or on the rocks during the summer.

Krupnik (pronounced kroop-NEEK), is made of natural wild bee's honey gathered in forests, and exotic spices. It has an outstanding honey-sweet taste and spicy bouquet with a strong, warming effect.

Once produced by the famous Baczewski Distillery of Lwow, Poland, Krupnik is produced today according to its original recipe by Starogard Distilleries of Gdansk.

Producer: Sobieski Distillery, www.wodki.gda.pl/eng
ABV: 40% Country of Origin: Poland

Is someone's taste in vodka like someone's taste in wine in that it's all a bit personal? Does the price tag make it better vodka or a more expensive and therefore a 'better' present? Confused Gone are the days of 'it was the thought' that counted, eh?

This site seems to have a pretty extensive selection with some rather scary price tags if you want to take a look and frighten yourself!! I've gone to the page in your price bracket to ease the pain a tad!! Wink

Next week I'm gonna be decanting the weird vodkas and other alcofrolic stuff I made in the summer/autumn. I have sloe, raspberry and blackberry vodka; sloe, raspberry and blackberry gin and blackberry whisky. If they taste yukky I'll be mighty cross, but I'm lead to believe I can just leave them and there's a small chance they will improve with age.............or I'll get desperate one day and decide they taste ok! Shifty

I have created two bottles of sloe vodka too...specifically made as Christmas gifts.

In my family we still operate in 'it's the thought that counts', and if said item is homemade - it's received as a very thoughtful present indeed. Mucho brownie points. Thumbs Up

It's not, nor is, sadly, the Salmiakki Koskenkorva. Probably just as well, though, as it's 40% alcohol by volume (80 proof), and as it tastes delicious, in the UK binge culture, it'd kill loads of teenagers. Actually, that might not be a bad thing...

At least Finlandia Vodka is fairly widely available. At least in my freezer it is... Angelic

Surely I can't be the only one that thinks all vodka is pretty much all the same? People who are smirnoff only drinkers do my tits in. Yeah, they can drink it if they want to pay for it, but it's the worst when you buy a bottle of some other vodka as a gift and you find that they are brand snobs when they wouldn't be able to tell the difference if you blindfolded them.

I guess advertising and image go a long way. I find it especially with girls in my group of friends. I'd have no money so I'd get the cheapest booze I could. Then one of them in asda will suggest that if I am getting a half bottle, we should just get a 70cl of smirnoff and split it. I would refuse and then I'm the one that looks like a fanny because I have just enough for the cheapest asda half bottle on the shelf.

I'm not in that position anymore, but I still don't get the whole expensive vodka thing. I just see it as a status thing and nothing more. I guess it's similar to being the kid wearing the NHS glasses while the rest wear the designer ones.

As for your mum, the correct answer is that it won't matter what vodka you get her. She'll just be glad she has got a gift from her son. Maybe make her a card too. That seems to go down well.

Thumbs Up

EDIT:oh, it's for your brother. Well, he's a dude so he'll probably be happy with anything as long as it is booze.

I usually get asked to take a bottle of salmiakki kossu to England for my daughter. 40% is fairly low, the stuff they sell on the ferries is 60% Twisted Evil
