I've got a HP compaq 6735s laptop.

As usual, yesterday i closed the lid and put it by the side of the sofa where it then stands by.
This morning, get it out, push power switch to resume and it powers on but no hard drive light, nothing but a blank screen, fan and power light.
I've tried switching on with no memory or hard drive and still the same, i've pulled it apart to make sure it's all clean and everything is plugged in and it's still exactly th same.
Fan output becomes warm after about a minute.

Any ideas anyone?

Try a different hard drive or put the laptops drive in a caddy and connect to a pc to see if its alive.

Check the wires connecting the screen to the motherboard.

My old laptop had a short in those wires so the screen would only come on at a certain angle.

If the laptop about 5 years old and you used it day in day out, might be time for an upgrade though.

Also try the hard drive in another laptop if possible

First try and get into bios at startup. Usually F2, F8 or F11 as soon as you press the power button. Also is the screen lighting up at all. Is that the black of a black screen or the black of no backlight at all. The best way to test this would be if it has a vga or dvi or hdmi port, to plug it into an external monitor or newer tv.

Well, after no joy with anything I stripped it down, checked everything and put it back together. Still the same.

I now have a way to get it running but is hit and miss.

Remove battery, plug power cable in and out quickly until socket lights up blue and then push power switch, mostly and trying regularly over a couple of days it won't work, sometimes it will and then i just leave it running or on standby until other half switches off the socket and it goes flat Rolling Eyes

HP 6735s

I've seen a couple of boards but buying sh and getting it through the post seems like asking for further problems

Don't seem to flash in any regular code type order, just hit or miss as to whether it'll fire up, been on or on standby since yesterday now, works fine and will even reboot but turn it off and it'll take friggin ages to get it to fire up again

Did you ever run it on an external screen?
With hdmi you can just plug into a TV and the display goes to it, but if you only have the VGA might need to do something onscreen to change over (which you can't see ...)
This would eliminate the dodgy screen connection possibility.

It will only fire up so far with no battery fitted but then it will run fine if i unplug it and use battery power.

never used external screen, it's not a screen problem anyway.

When i switch it on it you see screen power up and power & wi-fi light comes on and fan runs and thats it

When it fires up and actually going to run the display shows boot and hard drive light comes on, I know within a second or two if it's going to boot, if it isn't i pull out the lead and try again

Have you tried waiting longer before pulling the power out ?

if the POST is terminated then the bios can sometimes "recheck" the setup.

If you catch my drift.

Yeah, have left it on for an hour to get battery flat for an alternative fire up technique, several times, with and without power supply

On it's 3rd day now without other half managing to turn off the socket Very Happy

Yeah but often they'll just bin it and send a refurb, I needed the info on hard drive, business accounts etc that would have gone in the skip.
Now i've pulled it apart can't see them accepting it as a warranty claim

Copied the drive to backup drive just in case, i'll probably buy another complete lappy from ebay, put my drive in it and sell this one with other drive in it.

When I get something like this I list it honestly on my own account, saves hassle mainly except like on a current ad I have some zzr bits including an engine that states 'runs but knocks badly'

I get questions asking if the engine runs fine !!

Idiots
