What's the best way of cleaning them, and does anyone else actually do it?

I've read some nasty stories about people not cleaning them and getting some pretty nasty ear infections so it's about time I cleaned mine. I was thinking of baby-wipes or similar, but actually cleaning the little buggers is proving to be difficult Confused The foam just squashes as you try to clean Laughing

Question

Anyone with an answer to the original question?

I wouldn't advise cleaning them. If you put them in your ear when they are wet or damp it will make a most excellent breeding environment for nasty germs Confused

If they are the orange foamy type, I wash them in the washing machine inside one of those washing tablet bags. usually do it a couple of times before chucking them.

If you want washable ones then get plastic earplugs. At least they wont retain moisture.

Incidently I'm sure you can get about 5 pairs of foam ones from Boots for about 2 quid.

The foam ones stop working properly when you wash them or get them wet.

warm water, bit of washing up liquid and massage the buggers clean.

Make sure you rinse them out totally though and then leave to dry fully before re-using.

They're not intended or meant to be used lots of times, so when they're past their best just bin them and get some new ones. You can pick up a bag of about 200 pairs of good ones quite cheaply. I'll sort out some links for place to get them from at some point. Thumbs Up

The loudness of your can has nothing to do with it. The high frequency wind noise past a motorbike helmet at 70mph is sufficient to begin damaging your hearing after 30 minutes.

Try talking to yourself inside your helmet at that sort of speed to reinforce how loud it is!

3.99 for 5 sets of nice squishy 'coated foam' ear plugs that look like boiled sweeties, complete with little plastic box that fits nicely in your pocket from the chemist. When they get mucky, throw them in the bin!

As has been said before they are disposable.

You can get decent ear plugs from 50p for a pair, so there not that expensive!

But there are some alternatives, the police use permenent ones that are molded to the individuals ears, and there washable and re-usable, but they cost about £70 to make, but its something to think about!

Hi

Wind noise will make you deaf. PB did a test years ago of a load of helmets, sending a rider out wearing each one with a microphone for a noise meter in their ear, round a track at 100mph on a CBR600. The quietest was 105db, the noisiest 120db. Remember that noise is a logarithmic scale, so 105db is around 250 louder than an 80db bike exhaust.

These are my ear plugs:-

https://www.alfa-pages.co.uk/TempPicture/earplugs.jpg

I got them from Green Leopard.

I find these molded ones work almost as well as foam ones, letting through slightly more noise. However they stay in place on me infinitely better (the better ones stay in place at best for about 30 minutes), and are far easier to put in place.

All the best

Keith

Kris, why not wash your ears before you put them in then they won't get dirty. Laughing

I paid £22 for 200 pairs from this firm and they have a whole selectopn of different types.

Alternatively contact Dickies in Bath as they do a box of 200 pairs for about £19.
