The owner has had enough and is selling up;

https://www.banditforum.co.uk/forum/index.php?topic=31813.0

Quote:
Good afternoon all.

I am writing with important news regarding the forum.

Sadly, owing to 2.5 years of utter chaos in my life, I have not been around to look after this forum as I should. I must apologise for not responding to messages, I have not logged onto the forum for a while, and I turned off notification on my emails owing to the amount of email the forum generates and sends to me.

I'm not going to bore you with my life story over the last couple of years, but I am certainly not the same person I was prior to the launch of this site. Not only have I lost family, friends, a marriage and a house, I have also found myself with illnesses that I never thought would get me.

As such, and with regret, the forum is being sold. I would love to give it away, but I feel I need to sell it to return some of the money I have pumped into the server costs, which will help with my current, and never ending situation. The decision to sell the forum is not a reflection on the members, or the admin, all of whom have helped build and maintain this amazing community for like minded bandit lovers.

I also feel that a buyer will be committed to taking this forum to a new level, whereas someone who has received it for nothing has nothing to lose.

The new owner will purchase the forum, which will include everything. The forum, the domain, and of course the server details. They can then maintain the server, or move it to another. The new owner will pay for the domain transfer fees.

It has been great getting this community off the ground, and into magazines etc. The rideouts I attended were amazing, it is nice to know the forum has created friendships between members that will last a life time. But it's time for someone else to take the reins, and give you the forum you deserve.

I wish you all the best, and safe riding.

Rich

Been a member for some time, and although I've never posted on it, it's always been good for finding Bandit specific info.

It was really good for finding out stuff which is Bandit specific (obviously!) because all the guys have them and do most maintenance themselves.

I only really posted in the mechanical section when I had problems but they were always helpful.

Not that this workshop section isnt but this way all the posts were about Bandits Razz

No one will buy unless it generates a decent profit, how much is he asking?

+1

With all due respect to his personal circumstances, he's a dreamer if he expects somebody to cover his past hosting costs. A new owner will buy on potential revenue alone.

Or because they have a few bob spare and want to be the king of the castle.

I don't think there's any profit generated, there's no ads and what money has come in in the past has been from donations.

They're all still a bit up in the air with it all at the moment, still discussing possible revenue streams and/or membership fees etc, everyone has their own ideas. With the amount of traffic it has to be worth something from adwords, certainly enough to cover running costs I would have thought.

Among other things, there's talk of a group buyout, but I hope it doesn't go down that route as you can almost guarantee it'll end up imploding eventually.

Have to wait and see what happens, but it would be a terrible shame if it all went tits up. Hopefully it won't though, as it is a very good site and deserves to live on.

Hi

Only way it has any real monetary value is for someone who wants to buy it and get some revenue, probably from advertising. Given it is about a 10th the size of BCF I suspect to get any half decent revenue (ie, commercially worthwhile for a return on investment) the advertising would need to be on quite a large scale, and that alone would hammer the forums desirability.

Charging for access would destroy the forum.

While donations could be used, the running costs of a forum that size are pretty small (be under £200 a year all in) so not sure it is justified.

To me the realistic value is a small amount from someone willing to pay to keep it as a useful Bandit resource. The amount would be down to how generous they wanted to be. Anything from a few quid to cover the transfer of the domain name to a couple of hundred quid.

All the best

Keith

I'd stump up some cash, but only on the proviso that nobcat becomes the forum logo

These kind of things never end well, had something similar happen to a forum I was an admin on years ago (60K members, mostly PSP warez) and the new owner just squeezed as much cash out of the site/forum as he could then fucked off when he got bored and left it to rot Thumbs Down

Yep, I totally agree with advertising it will end up like this forum which I used to frequent and I thought the advertising was bad then, but they have added even more now and it is even worse now since checking to show how adverts ruin a site.

Its a great forum, with some really top people on there, hopefully the forum gets sold to some one who actually has an interest in bikes, and does not kill the forum with shite advertisements, as upto now they have never had any advertisements.

Either way its the people that make a forum and there another bandit forum that no one ever uses, so if this gos flump that one may get very popular all of a sudden Very Happy

If I had the money to keep it going I'd love to, and I even think it could easily generate it's own revenue to cover costs, but I'd have to insist on one thing, and that would be that everyone made their sigs smaller, and not put in pics of their bikes! Really annoying seeing the same bike pic over and over and over and again when following a thread.

BCF's design is more clutter free and much more pleasant on the eye despite having ads top and bottom. If they lost the busy sigs and had fairly unobtrusive ads it could be as good as here.

This. Oh god, this.

If there's one thing that drives me up the wall, it's sigs full of pictures which are often bigger than the posts.

The ones that go down the side, actually rotate so there is loads more than what you see, in fact it was one of the reasons I stopped using the site, when things become too commercial they lose appeal and you can see it is blatantly about money not the original point of said forum.

Just clicked on the "advertise on this forum" link and it is even worse
https://www.volkszone.com/?page_id=39

*yuck*

The thing is though, the guy who owns/runs that forum is minted, so it now just seems like greed.

Yeah, but the worst part is that he has even sold the advertising for that perticular section, and any other subsection of the forum
