Had initial settlement quote for the GSXR, what a fecking laugh?!

Bought 6th august for list price of £7999, stolen on 8th November and according to them the price for a like for like swap or current Market value is...

...£5445?

No marks, scratches or miles ( well less than 1500).

Let the shouting down the phone begin tomorrow.

That's insurance companies for ya. I wouldn't have insurance if it wasn't a legal requirement. I only ever have 3rd party. Having said that, I've not really got anything worth nicking Neutral

The word "initial" is the important word there. Unfortunately, you have to barter equally hard come claim time as you do when you're buying the policy. Insurers can be a real pain for that.

Do they not do a new for old scheme? I'm surprised they don't just replace the bike for you if it's only three months old.

Quick check on biketrader shows an 'ex-demo' 10 reg at a dealers for £5995 with under 300 miles. Possible you can get a bit off that too.
There offer does seem a bit cheeky, but not too far out - it's part of the price you pay for buying new.

It's value plumetted the moment you rode it off the forecourt.
You probably should get a little more, but not much.

You'll get further by being firm but polite, and remember; this is perfectly normal for insurance, don't take it personally. They offer you an amount, you reject it and tell them why, then they up the offer and so on and so on, until you're both (reasonably) happy with the compromise.

Do some (selective) research on prices before you call, and keep what you find as evidence to prove to them it's worth more than what they're offering.

If you start shouting you could alienate someone who could be doing you a favour, so it's wise to keep them sweet if you can, while still sticking to your guns.

What I would love to see is an insurance company that simply says "Your bike's been stolen? Oh no! No problem. We'll have the same bike at the same condition to you by the end of the week. No, there's no hidden charges or excess. That's why you have insurance! Have a lovely day!"

Anyway, sorry to hear it was nicked, that's a bugger.

Good luck with it.

plus i dont quite know how it works but they say like for like or equivelent market price. . . well my bike a 22 year old tzr 125 classic now. i payed 300 squid for her. spent well more than that all in but insured her for £500 pound value but i keep seeing bikes exactly the same being sold by dealers + private restord for £1000-£1200. so if they wanted to argue id just say look really u ow me that price. see what they say. +1 for only insuring because you have to whoever said tht.

This is why I fail to understand why people with any common sense buy new vehicles?

The moment your wheels rolled off the forecourt you lost ~£1000 whereas there are always bikes and cars about that have less than 1k miles, are still brand new, in warranty and everything for a huge discount off the price.

Whilst I understand SOME people have to buy new, I am firmly of the advent that I will never do so.

My family have a new car every 3 years which are actually brand new, but we lease our cars brand new as in the end it works out cheaper compared to the depreciation.

For example our current car isn't worth much more than £12,000 now (2008 Mitsubishi Lancer GS4 2.0 DI-D with all the optional extras) whereas we would have paid £22,000 for it brand new at the time. Instead we paid £225/month for it so it only cost us around £8k for 3 years usage instead of £10k.

If there was a way I could lease/hire purchase motorcycles then I would rather than buying them. Thumbs Up.

That's ok I suppose it is when you have things that are outer-mental or slightly inner-mental you have to consider insurance, although saying that I would consider inner and outer perimeter mental insurance. Thumbs Up

No, we just buy a new car every 3 years.

With any luck I will have a disability vehicle soon though if my application for HRMC Disability Living Allowance goes through, but for now we just buy/lease a new car every 3 years.

Aye, first offer can be worked on considerably but I would add you'll always lose a lot when buying new.

The VAT alone is £1400. That leaves £6600 if it was brand new, which it's not.

From someone who sits at the other end of a phone..... That is not the way to get any help from them.
Remember its NOT THEIR FAULT...... They are just there to help you, if you allow them too.

Check the paperwork you got to see if it does have the replace with new if under x months.

No like for like policy?

Does seem strange that they'll offer the market value to be able to replace for a like for like bike but wont actually do it?

2nd offer will be in the post within 7 days.

I've seen various dealers offering Hire Purchase agreements, after set period, you can buy it, or trade it in for another new bike and transfer the HP agreement,

Bimmer do a range of 'car like' finance, and in fairness you could probably find a finance company who'll sort you out with whatever product you like.

The sums don't add up though- you always end up paying a not-incomparable amount to a purchase, but don't have the bike at the end of it!

Well the title of your topic sums Hastings Insurance up quite well in my experience. I currently have both my car and bike insured separately via them (or through one of their namesakes) and the policies have been more trouble than they have been worth.

I haven't had to claim or anything like that, I set them both up online when they each came up for renewal (as Hastings came out with the cheapest quote each time) but the relentless paper trail that they then have you fighting your way through, demanding this demanding that and then picking fault with the details that you entered online and then trying to charge an extra premium on top of what you have already paid will drive you barmy.

I consider myself to be quite reasonable and don't hide or falsify any details when it comes to setting up insurance policies, but in fifteen years of motoring these morons at Hastings really take the biscuit. So much so that even if they are the cheapest next time around, I WILL NOT renew with them on principle alone.

My advice to anyone who reads this is to steer well clear of HASTINGS INSURANCE SERVICES, HASTINGS DIRECT, LIKEWISE INSURANCE SERVICES, RENEW INSURANCE SERVICES or any other trading names which come under the Hastings banner.

Oh and if you are unlucky enough to take a policy out with one of these companies, don't give them your real phone number or you will almost certainly be plagued with tele-marketing calls thereafter... Twisted Evil

You need to do a little research to come up with some facts to use in your 'negotiations'. I'd trawl through some dealer sites for like models age and condition and see what their prices actually are.

Remember any insurance company isn't out to do you any favours (despite what their adverts might imply). They are in it to make money. Paying you a little less means more profit and bonuses.

Although the insurance companies do have it as legalised mugging. You need to have insurance to be legal, therefore you're onto a loser to start with. IIRC there are only a handful of actual 'insurance' providers anyhow by the time you whittle away the brokers and associated companies. They have a nice little monopoly.
