For the past week or so since we've had Ice and Snow, I've been running the bike in the garage for an hour or so to keep the battery life and keep it running.

However, today I made a school boy error, and went 1 click past steering lock and left my sidelights on, I went to work at 1pm, and got called at 5pm to say my alarm was going off at home. Battery is totally flat Sad

I've always believed in a good piss take when somebody makes a daft cock up. So have your fun Laughing

Could be worse. Like any other situation.

Just go for a long run and charge it up.

Done it with my old car since it didn't beep when you opened the door + left lights on for some reason. Nearly done it on the DRZ because of the awkwardness of my relocated ignition barrel...

Double fail if you're doing this. Running a bike for no reason is a waste of time and money.

Let the bike sit until you need to use it. Running it at idle is probably draining the battery even more and increasing wear on the engine.

As far as im aware the battery does not get charged at idle, it actually needs to be revving or moving to charge it (im sure someone with more info will confirm it). I believe you can tell the battery is being charged when you rev the bike and the headlights get brighter, i had to do this to check if my rec/reg was working properly.

Also starting it drains the battery quite a bit, it roughly takes 10 miles or so to recharge the power used starting it.

You do get some charging at idle on most bikes. Leaving the engine idling for an hour at a time isn't necessary though and will tend to rot the exhaust out.

Get yourself one of these.

Just don't tell anyone you have it though. I have one but my friend has had it for 2 months. Laughing

Running a bike without it being in motion for long periods probably isn't a good idea. Get out there on the road! It's fun! Well, maybe not fun but it's not that bad Laughing

I think most people have left the side/parking lights on accidentally. Times like this that an ignition system that runs independently of the battery comes in very useful.

Running it in the garage for ONE HOUR!? Thats way too long. Just put the battery on charge and start the bike and get it up to a decent temperature once or twice a month if you are not using it.

Picked up a charger today, and it's now hopefully on it's way to recovering the battery. Will see what it's like tomorrow.
