Apart from stating the obvious fact that it is now snowing in most parts of the UK with even more threatened. Its headline news and its finally started to snow pretty heavily down here in Portsmouth.

Is it just me or is anyone else infuriated by the twats on the news complaining about the public transport network not being able to cope with the snow?

"I was due to fly out 3 days ago but the airports just cant cope with the snow, its disgusting"

Its not the fkin airports fault! They didnt ask it to snow. Its not their fault that by the time they have gone the lenght of the runway with their plows they have to start again.

Some dude just said on the news about his railcard costing 3.5K a year and blaming the rail company for their trains not running!

Again its not the rail companies fault they didnt ask it to snow.

I just think its pathetic. Being the heathen that I am I'd be the first to ask these complaining tossers if they believe in god and then to fkin blame him for the snow!

Fkin man the fk up and get over it. Its snowing. Snow brings the country to a halt when it comes in the quantities its been falling in. Always has and always will!

Rant over!

Of course!

Not so much as stressed here. I dont mind the snow. Rather not have to get to work and back in it as my only mode of transport is either motorbike or public. Neither is a prospect I'm looking forward to over the weekend. But I do know if the busses arent running it isnt the bus companies fault.

Spose its human nature to find someone to have a go at when things dont go their way.

From the slurred text I'd hazzard a guess at never. You'll probably fall into a hedge somewhere and get covered by snow.

Probably get found by some kids throwing snowballs like this

But dont worry. We'll all mourn the loss of one of BCF's most entertaining members.

I'd rather speculate on what time it'll be before you post some barely credible tale of trannies, East European organ traffickers and debauchery. Barmpot.

I completely disagree it is their fault.. its the 3rd Winter in a row that has had snow, these services have had lots of time to prepare but they havent! When it snowed in Feb 09? I was in living in Canada, the week it snowed a few feet over a few days we had the same amount of snowfall in 1 night! Guess what? I woke up in the morning to find the roads clear, public transport still running and Vancouver Airport business as usual.

So yeah its pretty pathetic and rather hilarious that for the 3rd winter in a row this country cant deal with a bit of snow.

I watched the same news clip Pink Floyd, I laughed because I can't imagine spending £3500 on a god damn train ticket for a year, I'd cry.

I did however like the point of the only guy who said that he lived in Moscow for 7 years, and they had less budget, but somehow managed to deal with the weather (a lot colder, a lot more snow and ice) easily and everything was kept running including airports and buses, so why wasn't the UK able to?

It is a little bit odd that over the past few years, our winters have been getting worse, and yet my local council are refusing to even grit our roads! I've been walking to and from work this week due to not wanting to die sliding down the road and getting mullered by a car, and yesterday, 6am, starting my walk enduring 8inches of snow (cold/wet boots+wet jeans are not fun!).. The council had actually let out a statement the night before, advising that they were waiting til 8am to see wether it was worth gritting the roads... WTF!?!? 8am is when most people are leaving for work, especially due to the weather meaning journeys are taking longer now...

The way its being dealt with is rediculous. Many countries have it a lot worse and yet deal with a lot lot better..

Using the argument that other places like Canada, Russia, Sweden all cope better when it snows is a false start really. These countrys get snow for 6 months of the year or get large quantities of snow each year.

Britian gets a week of it a year if they are lucky, Or unlucky as the case may be.

Besides the fact that people are prepared. Whats wrong with people doing the same here. If they know its going to snow like it has for the last lot of years then why not prepare for it. Whats stopping people getting chains for their tyres, Storing their own salt for their area.

The reason places in eurpoe can deal with the snow better is because Britian sends around 90% of the salt mined for winter to countries in europe. If we stopped sending our salt to grit their roads they would come to a stand still and we wouldnt.

So who is at fault there? The aiports cant order salt to grit their runways when its being sent abroad.

People in other country's are still more able to deal with the snow on an individual basis. People clear their own path ways. Business estates send a couple of their staff out to clear out the roads and paths. Most of all though, and god help me this is noticeable just going to Scotland, people's road-craft in the snow!

We are shockingly bad in the UK for wanting everything done by somebody else. Its one of the very few things I feel negatively about for the UK.

I agree completly. Thats pretty much the reason for the post. Other countries get on with it and adapt. We whinge and blame other people.

Today the kids are off school. So is that the teachers fault for not getting in? The transport system for not running? Or the governments fault for not preparing? Or just simply the fact that out little island of a country just isnt able to handle massive quantities of snow regardless of the preperation.

Its the old line.... How does a snow plow driver get to work? In Canada or other places that have this for a good part of the year the snow plow worker has his plow parked outside his house. In Britian they are parked in the council depot.

Cant drive the plow if one cant get to work and pick it up.

Wheres the announcmeents saying that aiports have shut down because of lack of salt? There is none. So what if we only get a few weeks of snow a year, we still had 2 previous winters it snowed and the country came close to shutting down. The weather people last year said this is the sign of things to come for the future, the weather forecasts for the past 3 months have said there is a good chance of snow in december so all these services have had plenty of warnings.

The reason why Airports have shut down is because they cant remove the snow from the runway thats nothing to do with salt supplies and all to do with failing to prepare and adapt, they have had 2 previous winters with snow, 2 previous winters to say hey look we fail clearing snow what are going to do about it?

Winter number 3 comes along and what have they done feck all or bought one snow clearing truck/plow for 3 runways....

So yes again its the people providing the service that fail, its nothing to do with salt.

As for the railways, the trans siberian railway runs in -60c temperatures all year long on trains older than my parents.

On the snow plow bit. I feel a bit differently about that, very on the fence.

This is something I have wondered for the last 3 winters.

The cost of having a fleet of gritters and plow's in storage all year for a few days of use VS The cost to the economy and stuff in general of everyone managing themselves.

Is it better not having them for the country or should we have them and let the sit there 360 days a year?

Does not however change my opinion that for all the snow we get, if individuals would 'do a bit' we would not have half the problems we do have come snow time.

Yet, as your so keen to point out, other countries can handle it.

As for the previous post. Imagine the uproar that would be caused if our transport prices went up because they have to buy and store X amount of snow plows just in case it snows badly. Imagine the uproar that would be caused if the council had to put up council tax to pay for the extra grit supplies and plows?

As for the rail. Diesel engines run better than electric ones. The problem with the rails is the points. If the points get snow in them they cant relay the signal and turn the light green for the trains, meaning the train has to stop while someone goes and defrosts the ice between the points. Its what happens when we rely on electric signals.

They probbaly dont have stupid health and safety laws.

As for the snow plows arguement, theres a fleet of gritters that does nothing when the roads are covered in snow they have to wait for it to melt before laying the salt and such, it should be simple enough to have clearing blades fitted to the front of them then they have a dual use and not just sat there waiting for snow.

I mean in Canada they have pick up trucks with a fitting on the front so that they can attach a plow to clear the roads.

I agree with this point. But we are the ones that have to pay for it and with the complaints already that the tax is way too much no one wants to pay extra. the councils have to get the money from somewhere and sadly that somewhere is from us.

How come countries like Canada, Norway, Switzerland, Russia, Finland etc etc can all cope with ice and snow, yet we cannot?

It's not as if train travel is a new thing.

Why then, do the people who work in railways not consult such countries and ask what it is that they do, to keep such things running? What exactly IS the money the railways charge being spent on??

Why do they not have snow ploughs and small heaters attached to the front of the train?

Also, had there been a little bit of honest communication about said services (online and over the phone) people wouldn't be so hacked off.
I spent over two hours yesterday waiting for the 'late' train (it never arrived, the station master told us, our train was stuck along with 16 other trains).

National Rail couldn't even say 'sorry we can't can through, so all trains cancelled...' they would rather have commuters hopes up, standing on platforms freezing for hours on end...going nowhere!!!

Last night on the local news it tells us, those poor souls who boarded such trains were stuck for 5 hrs or more. That's just wrong. So yeah, I do feel sorry for the poor gits who have no choice but to buy travel cards. Especially as the service is so poor.

Portsmouth got hit pretty bad, possibly worse then Jan this year.
I tried to get to work, hour and a half at the bus stop - I got told to head back home.
I dont blame anyone, and I would of prefered not to get on a bus going down icey roads and the motorway. Within that one hour i had seen 2 busses skid, and a car do a 360 on a small roundabout Confused

Nobody, especially private companies, want to spend any money on something that may or may not happen.

However, it always ends up costing them in the end through lost business, and probably employee injury.

Last company I worked for wouldn't buy salt, so we spent most of the winter snow days (when I could be bothered to go in) having to tow our stranded trucks around the yard and dragging the forklifts back into the warehouse with chains attached to a 4x4.

Ton bags of rock salt cost about £60 in the off season, so a couple of hundred quid worth of salt (which is less than the cost of 1 tank of diesel) would have saved all those lost manhours. I also fell over a lot trying to walk around on the premises, and for someone a bit older/heavier that could be bad news. Not to mention customers.

I'm off work this week, and i'm glad about it, because the current place doesn't give us shovels or snow chains, and the trucks have automatic transmission.

Yet, I know precisely the reaction if I were to ring up and say i'm stuck. "Get it sorted, quick as you can, that load has to be somewhere at such and such a time".

The whole culture and attitude towards snow needs to change. Needs to start with people taking it seriously.

I notice the focus on the news this time is much more about the buggerance it is causing rather than the "ooo, aahhh, look at all the pretty snow" that we got in Feb this year.

Maybe people are starting to wake up to it, but we will have to see.

For the time being at least, the financial "crisis" will be used as an excuse for the public sector to do nothing because it cannot afford to, and the private sector will say similar because it has been such a poor few years in terms of profit.
