Hi all, I recently purchased a Hyosung GV125 (very happy with my early midlife crisis purchase). However it has started to worry me. Firstly when in 6th gear it sometimes coughs and I loose power but the revs go up. Lurching forward in a very uncool manner.
Secondly, and this is more recently, it has started errm sneezing I guess. whenever I drop down a gear slightly too soon it sounds like it sneezes. I can't tell where the noise is coming from either.
The fact that this bike has had a service in the last 2000 kilometers and has only 4500 kilometers on the clock, makes me feel I've forgotten how to ride carefully. Any thoughts would be welcome.
Cheers!

Oh yes and I nod to everyone, even scooters with L plates! Ok not everyone.

Are your revs high enough for the gear you are in ?

What speed are you doing when you are in your top gear (5th or 6th) ?

The noise is like a sudden rush of air escaping, like spitting but without any spit. Not too dissimilar to my Granny's tutting.

Lose power but your revs go up? Your clutch is slipping.

I know I was shocked at the 6th gear too, I keep counting and I'm sure there's six. I can get up to 50-55mph in 5th gear with the revs are hovering at 10,000 out of 13,000. I then go up to 6th and the revs drop to 8,000. It will eventually creep up to 60mph (once to 65 but then I ran out of safe road). But during this increase in speed in 6th gear is when the coughing happens. Like i said I loose power and speed and the revs spike higher during the cough. Makes a horrible noise. Any thoughts?

Quite likely, do I just tighten the cable by the clutch lever?

If you just tighten the cable, it'll slip more Smile

Slacken it off, then adjust it so you have a couple of mm travel before the clutch starts to lift. There's probably another adjuster at the other end of the cable too.

It's more of a trial and error thing, too slack and you'll find gear changing become awkward (or impossible) and the bike will creep forward when in gear with the clutch in. Best to take it for a run with the spanners in your pocket, so you can fine tune it.

When it looses power in 6th, it lurches and revs, and then what happens? Do you have to change to 5th, or does it fix itself?

It fixes itself almost straight away. Then at any moment it will do it again, it's very sporadic. Usually happens when pretty girls are passing by, something to do with sods law I guess. I will write back when I've had a chance to tinker with the clutch cable.

Hello all. To those who may have been following this thread I can now tell you what was happening. Firstly the clutch slipping was causing the bike's rev's to spike whilst loosing power. This problem has been solved with a spanner and 15 minutes of tinkering to get it right. Thanks for your suggestions.
The other "sneezing" problem was more serious and I'll just explain that the sneezing was not an air escaping noise as I first thought but metal tapping / scrapping on metal many times in a short space of time, like an instant rat-a-tat-tat. Turns out it was the chain coming loose with the sound coming from the front sprocket. It had become stretched in a small section and so was easily overlooked. Now with a new chain and sprockets I have not encountered the problem since. I wasn't aware how short a life span chains had but also and to any fresh bikers out there. Make sure to test the flex of the entire chain when doing a routine check, don't just tap it with your boot as you go into the house.
I hope this helps anyone else who might be experiencing similar issues. Thank you all for your help and suggestions, it feels good to ride out in confidence again. Take care

Glad you got it sorted. Have you been properly maintaining the chain? Regular adjustment and lubrication will prolong the life dramatically. IMO most of your symptoms seem related to the chain being too loose and struggling to stay on the sprocket at low revs. Make sure your chain is tight enough by measuring the play halfway between the front and rear sprockets. A loose (or tight) cahin is actually pretty dangerous.
