Alright all, not sure how this will go down with you lot but i've bought myself something nice and racy. Sadly its not an R6 but something with four wheels. Its an MGF! Embarassed All hairdresser comments expected!

Things is i'm only 20 and its the 145bhp vvc model making it a bit steep on the old insurance. Just wondering if fully comprehensive insurance allows any driver to drive car?

i've attached a pic of it anyways. I bought it after a bad smash and repair is nearly done. Just a bit of gap adjustment and priming & painting to be completed. This is how it looks now.

Cheers

FC may allow you to drive any car, but I doubt it would cover that car to be driven by any driver.

However having some lower risk drivers on the policy (your parents) will probably bring the cost down a fair bit - knocked about 30% off my car insurance.

MG. Rover engine. tss. I hope you have a stock of spare head gaskets.

Something tells me its going to be expensive! Its a group 14/15 car which is well in the high risk grouping.

The MG club offer a discount so its worth joining and the standard alarm as been classified as Thatcham Category 2 Level.

As Robby said, fully comp will be for the driver and not the car. Do plenty of shopping around and look at some of the company that insure high risk/modified cars for the best deals.

Shocked

As for the insurance on it, I have found from experience that the big companies like AA, Norwhich Union etc will be way off the mark. Smaller companies such as MCE should be a lot better. You normally have to be 25 to get cover to drive any car.

Well good luck with it Thumbs Up

If you can't afford to insure your mgf and your getting insurance on a different car then i'd try CIS https://www.cis.co.uk/ because i've got my insurance through them T.P.F.T and that covers me on any other motorveichal that i'm licenced to drive and i'm 21 (But i've had the same cover/company from when i was 17)

It is a Rover engine fair enough Robbie, but its also used in the Lotus Elise so it cant be that bad. Ive seen them get to 100k driven properly before and have no cylinder head problems. If you dont rev them too hard in low gears it should be fine.

Looks like I will have to get my dad to insure it and be a named driver but it will still cost a bomb. 135MPH top speed and cream leather & wood trim though Laughing . Will be worth it

A work mate of mine has got a MGF, he looks after it very well, doesn't thrash it and how did it pay him back? The cylinder head went and it set him back £1500 for the repair. Sad

Not to worry. Changing a head gasket isn't too hard, only problem I can see is Ill probably have to drop the engine out of the subframe to get at it. Thats if the worse case scenario happens anyway

Not true really, as I don't think Lotus use the vvc version which is the one that has the most mechanical problems (or if they do it is only in a limited number of cars).

A friend had a VVC MGF and had loads of problems with it.

I also know someone with an Elise which has now been fitted with a Honda engine once it was out of warrenty and Lotus would not pick up the tab for replacement engines.

Insurance wise you just have to do the same as with bikes and ring round loads of places. Expect the insurance to sting, but you should get cover to drive cars you do not own.

All the best

Keith

Try elephant/admiral for insurance - I'm 19 with a 2.6 litre merc (group 15) and it costs me £1k for 10 months. No one else could quote under £2500.

I am with Tesco and they are very good when it comes to young drivers. Also try www.elephant.co.uk as well because they are pretty good as well Thumbs Up

I'm with Admiral, £354 on a 2.0 GT Celica, fully comp and i'm 21. Under my dad who has over 5 years no claims but other companies couldn't even get close. Weird thing was, Admiral was £35 cheaper than Elephant - Same Company.

Something to keep in mind also, advise them you drive another car on a regular basis and say you'll do minimal mileage, they take these points on good faith but i certainly have no sympathy for insurance companies. You don't need to disclose what mileage you actually do but just estimate. My quote was £100 cheaper this way.

Hope you get a decent deal!

Mat
