Hi
As Xmas is almost here and im not one for after shave an such i thought a good thread tapping kit would be nice for the garage from my wife, i see many no name kits and wondered if any one has any recommendations whether to buy a full kit orstart of small. I m not sure which size handles if thats what they are called to get.
So recommendations please.

I have the Halfords Advance set, about £30 - have used it to tap a few threads on the YBR (worst one being a fork leg where the mudguard screws on after drilling out a heavily corroded bolt that snapped in there). It's metric and has a good set of taps and dies as well as a nice pitch gague you can line up with the threaded part you're going to be working on (or one of the same pitch) so you can make sure you choose the right tool for the job. Comes with 2 tap wrenches, a big one and a smaller one.

https://www.halfords.com/webapp/wcs/stores/servlet/product_storeId_10001_catalogId_10151_productId_236397_langId_-1_categoryId_165572

Main thing with tapping threads is to be slow and patient, do it a bit at a time. Start with the tapered tap if tapping a new thread, or the normal one if you're just repairing a damaged thread. A turn or so, then back off, get rid of the swarf, carry on a little bit more, back off again etc.

I was told that you should buy the taps / dies as and when you need them because the quality of the individual ones (and cost I hasten to add) is usually much higher than the ones you get in the sets.

Also some of the finer threads are usually missing from the cheap sets - such as an M10 1.0. I needed one of those to fix a bleed nipple thread (useful for fixing spark plug threads also). You can pay around £8 for one of those on it's own, compared to £30 for a load of taps, dies and misc bits and pieces. Obviously something has to give to get a set that cheap and it's usually the quality.

As a present though, a set makes a good start and you can always add to it later with better quality tools.

Here's the same set that Halfords are selling (Clarke rebranded I think) from MachineMart except it's £23 instead of £40

I was looking at this for the tap wrench, seems good quality m1-12, tried finding the snap on tap wrench here but coudnt find a supplier, shame as its $26 in the us.

https://www.mscjlindustrial.co.uk/ATW-14015L/SEARCH:KEYWORD/product.html

Then maybe buying the taps as needed, plenty of high quality taps avaliable.

I bought the Machine Mart set some years ago just for the standard sizes and leave it in the garage, it is good quality.
As said get the odd finer/coarser sizes you need as and when and in HSS if it's more than a one off you want it for, though it is more expensive than the carbon steel average ones. I wouldn't trust half of those on fleabay I've bought some shite "HSS" in the past and now just use Tracy tools stuff if I need replacements for the more comprehensive stuff I've got in the shed workshop

If you tinker around with a variety of different things then one of these sets may be more suitable:-

In addition to the usual metric stuff it also includes a variety of Imperial sizes. Quite a handy set to own if you are ever likely to have to work on any old British stuff.

Hi
Thanks for the advice, ive found the snap on ones too

https://buy1.snapon.com/catalog/item.asp?P65=&tool=all&item_ID=9870&group_ID=1167&store=uk&dir=catalog

looks nice , i will go for that and buy the taps as needed, good hss ones or the likes of dormer seem highly recommended, many times here it is said its better to buy quality lol so.

I got the cheapest tap and die set I could find on eBay, and the taps and dies are brilliant. The tap holder was rubbish though, luckily, I had another one.

ditto ms51.

cheap die sets imo are fine apart from the actual holder so i did likewise.

For a divvy bodger like me, I found them great and they've done every job I asked them to.

As has been mentioned, for me, its more about the quality of your technique, than the quality of your tools....

reading back that last bit, I would say exactly the same for someone wanting advice on how to have a go on his misses too...

It looks a good buy... but it's 1/2" capacity really for M8 upwards and you'll probably find it won't hold the smaller taps you commonly use very well, you really need the 1/4" size for M6 and under. The locking ring chuck type holders hold the smaler taps better.
