Who owns a XL125V? Saw one of them today and think it looks lovely! Couldn't see how many miles it had done but it was a 06 plate and looks mint!

Looks better then the XR125L if you ask me!I think I should buy one!

The XR is a fine bike for what it is. The varadero is another bike all unto it's own. A grown up's 125. It wont be the fastest bike, but it will be one of the strongest. A good all round bike that if you are on the large side, will suite you down to the ground.

I had one for my first bike and it was a great introduction to riding. Big and comfy, lovely sound from the vtwin and scorpion pipe but struggled at anything over ~65. Trying to convince my brother to get one when he does his cbt so I can ride one again Razz

Owned mine for around 2 months now, bought it on an 07 plate with 4200 on the clock. As others have said, it's not the fastest bike for a 125, but it's very well built and feels like a big bike compared to other 125's.

If, you pin the throttle, there's not much there. I weigh just under 11 stone and it will get to 70 on long straights, but doesnt like to go above 50-55 on the hills. Fuel consumption is great. I get around 230 miles on a full tank. It's extremely comfy as well, great for long rides. It rides well in the wet as well as the dry, I've never felt it twitch on the bends to be honest.

In my experience, it's a great all round bike for a 125. I like it more compared to my GP100 as the clutch is a lot lighter and the power delivery is really smooth. I'll miss it when I move onto a bigger bike.

Actually, they're quite fast as far as 4 stroke 125's go. My brothers one has no problem hitting a true 80MPH down a hill. I would personally kill to have one. I've been wanting one for about a year now. If I had the money I'd definitely buy one over other 4 stroke 125's.

They seem to be reliable, comfortable and well built.

yeah, I forgot to mention the reliability. Over the winter I've had no problems whatsoever, it starts every time.

Good bikes, a mate bought one to do his test on, he was reluctant to get rid when he passed.
held it's value well too, got a good price for it.
reliability? it never missed a beat.

Mines a 2003 model, never misses a beat, comfy, good road presence, excellent view over traffic and does feel like a big bike. I have hit a true 80mph but in all honesty at 70mph theres nothing left for overtakes as acceleration from 60 to 70 aint that quick so anything you get from 70 onwards is a struggle. Wouldnt change mine though as its great on go go juice and suits my commuting needs down to a tee.

The only drawback with mine was that I couldn't get past the 50mph-in-a-60 mob without a good long straight (although sometimes the height lets you see over hedges etc and go when it'd be silly in a car). Oh, and it struggled to keep a good speed up these Welsh hills (I'm 16 stone BTW Wink ).

It was expensive to buy, but the trade-in was high too Wink

The Bandit does overtake fine @33bhp; I'd really like more choice of bikes in the 250-400cc range for commuting.

Or, for the same money, you could probably pass* your test, then buy something a DR600 which weighs less and has maybe three times the power Smile.

* Not sure on the reasoning of buying one if you haven't.

The Varadero has like, 3 more horse power than the CG and the CG let me get up to 60MPH in 4th gear if I had to, so I'm sure you could have gotten up to 60 faster if you had to. Anyway.

I think it's because some people will just really like the bike and it satisfies 90% of their biking needs (probably commuting). I love the bike and Honda basically do the 4 variations; the 125 varadero, 680cc ~ transalp, similar africa twin and the varadero 1000cc.

The other more powerful versions can be pretty expensive.

Remember the Varadero has about an extra 40kgs or so on the CG and a bigger frontal earlier.

On your second point, I think it's because people are lazy basically - certainly why I stayed on a 125 that seemed to 'fit my needs' for so long.

Maybe. I'm a cautious overtaker anyway due to a vivid imagination and a generally chilled attitude (better late than dead).

In my case, it's becasue I'm 6'4" and it was the only 125 that really fitted Wink

I wouldn't say loads. I know of the Hyosung GT125?

I'm talking big in riding position for the taller rider, not unnecessarily heavy to make to slower.

I sat on many, many 125 bikes - the Varadero was the only one that seemed like a serious commuting proposal and felt "right".

If they did a 250-400cc version (33bhp and decent torque), I'd buy one in a flash.

Try any in my list?

TDR125 has similar styling, but a more flexible engine.

A 33hp version is surely just a restricted V-Strom, etc - don't see the point in making a lower cc version when it'll probably weigh just as much as much.

I do think the XR would piss all over it off road! I bet it sucks green laning! Would be costly if you had an off as well!

The Varadero 125 is nice to ride, my dad has one that I've used a few times - it does him alright for commuting on (passed his full licence 2 years ago) I didn't find it much more powerful than a CG though.

I threw my leg over a few dirt bikes - none clicked (quite like the XT660's from doing the bigger bike rounds, mind you).

Just Googled the TDR as it is one that went below my horizon - and I was quite surprised as it looked OK - ahhhh.... two stroke. Rightly or wrongly, my brain says too much maintainance, too much hassle, will sieze underneath you half way to work. So I'm 4T only I'm afraid Sad

Yea and "bikes are dangerous, you'll die or be paralysed if you get one" too Wink.

Oh and XT660 Rolling Eyes - do you also find your self drawn to women that could be mistaken for sumo wrestlers too? Razz
They weigh as much as bikes that make two to three times the power for some reason.

Finally, first impressions don't always mean much. There's been enough bikes that I've not been overly fond of on first impressions but got because they're good value anyway, then really liked. And others I've thought that would be amazing from first impressions, then been a bit disappointed with.
