After the light rain yesterday a lot of salt has been washed off the roads and they have not re-gritted. At 11 this morning my van let go on a main road in the inner city ( Mosley Rd between the Village and King's Heath), lucky I was in the van as after a few seconds I found some traction again.
My first mistake was driving (legally) in a bus lane, my second was assuming that as it was +3 degrees outside that there would not be icy areas. My third mistake was thinking the council know what they are doing.
Take care peeps, we are expecting -6 tonight and I have not seen a gritter all day.

Had a few close calls today aswell.. I too made the same mistake 3oc I thought should have defrosted everything!

Had a bit of fun in the car on the backroads, til I went to slow down at a small around about and (thankfully braking early knowing, at this point, there is still ice about) and skidded all the way to the roundabout and just over the line... with three cars going over (they didn't seem to notice me skidding towards them Shocked )

Also my mate slid off this bike today at only a few mph!

I wanted to take the bike out today because I saw the sun and hadn't used it in ages but in the end I couldn't be bothered Laughing In the end I just took it out and started up to make sure it still works Laughing

Glad I didn't go for a ride now! Where I live it's clear and they've put some fresh grit down but other parts of London still have a bit of snow/ice

Well I've managed to get the bike to and from work this weekend, thankfully without any major problems.
I had a few nervous minutes riding up a spangly glittered road surface at 6am until I got to the main road, but all was well Thumbs Up

Popped down to the NEC on the bike. A few times I thought the clutch was slipping but realised it was wheel spin on the motorway. Great fun though. Thumbs Up

Been that way today, NEC in the car. Saw an elderly gentleman fall on the pavement in Birmingham. We stopped and helped him up and luckily the girl in the local convenience store got some tissues to clean up the blood from the cut on his nose.
Glad we didn't go on the bikes. It was -2 when we reached home agin at 6pm, looks like it will be the car for work again next week Sad

South East sucks arse as well.

Hastings has been shite, my car is useless, I got stuck with it for a few days as it just couldn't move (bmw so RWD).

Not been much gritting, and now all the snows melted and the rains came down its pretty much turned to sheet ice.

I've had quite a few slides in the car and wouldnt take the bike unless i'd be happy to drop it.

Yeah i lost the front earlier at work, arrogantly assumed the snow and ice had cleared and ended up lying in the road with a bent gear lever and bruised ego

I work from 6pm until midnight at the weekends and Portsmouth was bad both ways.

On the way to work there was that freezing fog business. Couldnt see more than 20 meters in front of me and couldnt ride with the visor down because it would mist up from the outside and wiping it every 2 seconds was next to useless.

Work is in a private road with next to no traffic and walking to the bike was like walking on ice. I tip toed the bike out of work and home. The fog had cleared but the roads were terrible. Pulling off the main road and the roads were white. Not a good sign when you have to park on a slope and the only way to park safe is to do a U turn at the bottom of the hill or you struggle to get the bike pushed uphill to park.

Down the hill "please dont fall" foot down "oh shit thats slippery please dont fall" 3 point turn "sod the U turn please dont fall" back up the hill a little "please stop sliding like that" gently walk the bike backwards into the parking space "please dont fall."

Phew!

Take it easy out there on the roads over the next few days folks.

Rode the bike into the West End today - black ice everywhere & the white lines are seriously slippery. Had to accelerate hard to get away from a bendy bus that wasn't paying attention, fish tailed and felt it go light and nearly ended up sliding down Gower Street on my backside! Shocked

Evil or Very Mad I temped at Birmingham City Council for about a year, so I'm well aware of the level of reprobate and/or social reject that is employed by the Council. I won't tar everyone with the same brush, but it was my experience that about 25% were terminally useless, 50% had given up on life in general, work in particular, 15% were actually mental, and 10% were normal people that worked hard to cover for the deficiencies of their colleagues.

Don't think that the Council know what they are doing; from their working practices I'm surprised that they haven't collapsed and been replaced by the Glorious Republic of Birmingham...

If there is black ice, which I assume is very compact ice, then I'd expect it to take a while to melt even in + degrees.

I don't ride m'bike at all in cold weater.

black ice is just ice that is proud of it's heritage.. i've heard that one of the lifestyle TV stations is considering giving it it's own History Month Very Happy

..I think it's just ice that is thin enough to be see-through isn't it?

I'm not averse to cold weather, protected as I am with a fairly substantial layer of Bioprene insulation I actually prefer crisp & sunny minus temps, but I must admit that when it's icy like this having transportation that can stand up by itself seems like a really good idea Smile
