John Cage 4.33
The record is almost silent, 4.33 was composed by Cage in 1952 and is his most famous piece of work. It is in fact in 3 movements of determined length and time and is scored for the musicians. When performed by solo piano the lid is closed signaling the start of the piece.
when we look at music it is not all about noise, silence plays a great part in our perception and in the playing, Miles Davies knew this and his not playing the trumpet is just as emotional as when he plays. Of course the silences in Miles music are not him not playing the trumpet but him playing the trumpet silently, this is how we should view 4.33.
To see it performed live can be funny but it can be very moving, as a nation our most sacred moments are the silences that unite us in the early weeks of November and just as during of silences for the war dead there is noise in Cages piece, at the Cenotaph people cough, birds sing and the wind blows. With a full orchestration of 4.33 we will hear the musicians breath, maybe a shoe shuffle but most of all we hear our own thoughts.
Think about Simon Cowell not being at number one.

Kinda reminds me of "The Sound of Free Speech" on the original Small Wonder pressing of Feeding of the 5000 by Crass. The story goes that the pressing company were so offended by the lyrics of Reality Asylum they refused to press it, so the band substituted 2 minutes of silence at the start where it would have been.

In 2002, one of Mike Batt's manufactured bands, Planet, released a CD that featured a silent track. Batt foolishly credited the silent track to Batt/Cage and the joke cost him a small fortune:-

''Mike Batt created the eight piece classical crossover band, The Planets. Their album Classical Graffiti was released in February 2002 and went straight to number one on the UK classical music chart on the day of release and remained there for three months. Batt was sued for copyright infringement over the track "A One Minute Silence", which consisted of one minute of silence and was credited to 'Batt/Cage'. The publishers of John Cage's music alleged that the credit invoked Cage's silent piece 4′33″, and that the trust was entitled to receive royalties. An out of court settlement was reached, with Batt paying a six-figure sum to the John Cage Trust.''
