My bike tax runs out at the end of this month and I am going to declare it SORN.
Dp I have to SORN it once or if I keep it every 12 months?

Had a quick read of the DVLA site and apparently I have to wait until they send me the tax renewal/SORN form before I can do this.

If I am able to repair the bike in future how do I go about taking it off SORN and taxing it again?

And MOT is needed of course.

My little monkey bike has been SORN for a while now, just get the usual tax reminder every year. You can tax a vehicle without the reminder, you just need the application form from the post office.

If you had more than a month to go on the tax you could have sent the disc in for a refund and SORNed it on the tax refund form, but in this case you'll have to wait and do it on your reminder form. You'll get a reminder form every year which has a SORN box to tick if you don't want to retax it. I think you can also SORN online from your reminder.

As the others have said you can tax it any time as long as it's MOTd. And you are able to ride it to and from the MOT centre without tax as long as you book an appointment with the test centre.

Thanks a lot for the clear replies.

The tax runs out at the end of this month so I will wait until I get the reminder in the post and SORN it.

You won't always get a reminder. They can get lost in the post (being generous to the DVLA), and the DVLA seem quite happy for this to happen as it gives them an excuse for some revenue.

All the best

under saturatory law even if you forget to sorn they can't fine you when in most cases they do.

Basically we are not required to notify them when i bike just happens to be off the road! It should be an automatic SORN in my opinion.

See this on watchdog for more....

..........Duncan Peck is a motorcyclist who took on the DVLA - after applying to take his vehicle off the road. He posted his SORN application but then six months later he received a penalty for £80. The DVLA insisted they hadn't received Duncan's application and told him it was his responsibility to contact them when he didn't receive acknowledgement of receipt. Duncan refused to back down and refused to pay the fine, so the DVLA took him to court. When the case was heard in March, the judge found in Duncan's favour saying the DVLA has no statutory power requiring anyone to contact them should they not receive an acknowledgment letter.

You are required to inform them (even worse soon as you will need to SORN a vehicle if it is off road but still taxed, but not insured). However legally having posted the form to them you have completed your legal obligation (under the interpretations act it is deemed to have been received if it is posted), and that is the reason the Watchdog example was in the clear.

Rather more dubious is that the DVLA are attempting to pervert the course of justice by offering to take a bribe (ie, the £80 they are trying to extort from you) so you can avoid going to court and the possible £1k fine that involves.

All the best

The only thing that takes 30 seconds at the DVLA is for them to issue one of their BS 'fines'.

Do you actually understand anything you have just written considering how contradictory it is?
