I've only had my licence 3 weeks and I was out in a carpark practicing u-turns, figure eights, etc. I am really happy because prior to today, I couldnt confidently do a u-turn on a small street. Now I can confidently lean over until the pegs scrape (although I avoid it).

The problem is, the pegs dont scrape - my boots do first. So without realising, I wore a big chunk out of the side of my (annoyingly expensive) boots! Crying or Very sad

Time for a sportier bike I reckon ...

Unless your on a mini moto, how on earth do you manage that on a uturn! Surprised Are they different down under? Here you do them very slowly and if you leant over that far you'd be kissing the tarmac Shocked

and if your boots are touching down then you are probably a DUCKFOOT

put the balls of your feet on the pegs not the instep

instep riders look ridiculous and still brag about getting their toe down Rolling Eyes

How did you pass your licence then if you couldn't do a u turn ?? Or did you JUST do it?

I have never touched my foot on the floor doing a slow u-turn,....I can't see how I could.

actually, you'd probably be surprised just how far your bike can lean - rs125 should be fine. its not about speed either - 20km/h is perfect for a sharp u-turn

JodieWodie - we arent required to do u-turns for the test, but they teach us a bit. our test is mainly just emergency braking and swerving

Mr C - i dont know what a duckfoot is, but keep in mind my pegs were scraping too...

try riding duck footed

put your instep on the footrest and stick your foot out at 45 degrees

bingo - toe sliding

now look at people on the road and observe just how ridiculous it looks

sorry - pet high horse, I'll get off it now Embarassed

I actually managed to get a knee down on the goose to turn round in a Cul De Sac...

But generally i leave the clutch out and drift round on tick over using the rear brake to help steady me round..

On the NSR i just used the clutch and revs to help me round. But it always was hit and miss with that bike.

oh right. i assume then that you are referring to the foot position that allows you to change gears and use the rear brake quickly and most comfortably? but u care more about looks right Rolling Eyes

Maybe it depends on how big your feet are? I've got small feet and keep them tucked in for easy gear changing / braking, but maybe if you've got bigger feet, having them at 45 degrees to the bike is better? I've no idea if that's the case, I though everyone kept their feet straight, coz it does look daft otherwise! (IMO)

haha oh right i didnt read 45 degrees, that would look pretty stupid

I find it best to put the arch of my foot on the peg so i dont have to lift my foot up for a gear-change or rear-brake

nope, I ride with my toes on the footrests until I need not to

don't always use the rear brake, in fact it's sometimes best not to and I know when I will need to change gear so I can anticipate it and move my foot forward

it's a habit, defintiely not a hardship and you certainly have no need to keep the controls covered at all times - in fact I find it much easier to ride aggressively, fast, hang off etc. when I am on one if I do this, it's very difficult to move around on the bike if you keep the controls covered by keeping your instep on the footrest - watch racers

I'm not primarily concerned with looks but duckfeet do make oi larf Laughing Laughing Laughing

go on, next time you are out have a look, there will be far many more of them about than you think

and then ask - omigod, am I one ? Laughing Laughing

You're all forgetting the fact a tight road in Australia is about 3 miles wide!

Actually, from my point of view, he's referring to the foot position where you can actually corner. Riding duck-footed is just lazy Razz

Mr C, I have never thought about it before ... but now that you mentioned it ... there is guy that does my same commuting journey every morning and he is a "Duck Foot" ... I have thought in the past that it look funny ... but really never thought that there was a name for it!
