Which balaclava?

I never used a silk balaclava before. Is it warmer than fleece balaclava?

Having bought a GORTEX lined scarf thing last year, i recomend them again, the lady makes them at home in brum, about 6 quid ...

You will have to pm her, as not got any listed at present ... they work VERY well .. even my sceptical bro agrees .. doing 100 plus on a big naked bike ...

Order a wider one than normal if you are 10 stone plus ..

+1 for buffs (or in my case an aldi neck tube with a fleece decathlon one underneath for really cold days)

I tried a balaclava (albeit a reasonably thick windproof one) which squashed my head and gave me an absolutely splitting headache after about 2 miles.

Windproofing round your neck is what you want, silk balaclava won't do much for that, helmet will keep your head warm I reckon (or at least mine has been the last couple of weeks)

This balaclava is not for me. It is for mrs. I am happy with my fleece tube.
Mrs. keeps saying "i am cold, i'm cooold". She's got a cotton gaitor, an afghan bandana thingy and a fleece tube but somehow a piece of cold air finds its way through her defence.

If I was you I'd make sure she tries any balaclava on before buying or at least have an option to return, as I find it tricky to get them to fit - they are too big and often one size so baggy and not very fit for purpose.

I bought mine from an outdoor shop (Cotswold Camping) and I use it for green laning, as my lid is more open than my road lid. However, it is far too thick to fit under my road lid.

As a best compromise I would suggest a one of these - I find that if I'm careful when I put my lid on and make sure that it's all tucked in properly I'm nice and snug!

Oh, I do find it tricky to get my jacket on without rucking up the bit at the back, but she has you to be lovely and help her

How does one stop one's specs from fogging up, then?

I have a fullface lid but there is no visor (it broke off) ... so effectively its open to the elements.

I wear glasses, and I have tried tucking a scarf across my throat and mouth to keep the worst of the cold wind off - cos I don't want to be a sissy with a balaclava and a neck warmer, cos I only go 11 miles into the centre of town, its hardly heavy-duty motorway/countryside riding. But I'm feeling the cold more these last few years.

So with this scarf arrangement, my glasses keep fogging up.
What's the trick to stopping them from doing that?

Seems like if I breathe thru my nose, it fogs them up worse, one assumes cos the warm air is closer to the lenses of the spex?

Do I have to breathe thru my nose, or my mouth?
Or am I just philosophising down the wrong track?

Had one, then the visor AND the specs fog up.
I never know which works, keeping the "vent" on the mouthpiece open or closed, none of it works the way I want them to.

On a more serious note, when I was on the pushbike I had a respro visor, kept your face warm and stopped you from fogging your specs (used to wear clear sunnys to stop the cruft getting in my contacts).

A bit of helmet antifog stuff is also worth a try.

^^^That's what i thought when i got them..Turns out that summer gloves are vented and silk doesn't have any windproof properties.

Even with my winter gloves the silk doesn't trap enough heat. Ok for the majority of my shortish journeys. I do use them with my summer gloves and neoprene bar muffs on longer trips.

I prefer silk liner gloves and balaclava over fleece as it has less bulk and won't stretch my gloves or helmet.
