How often should i get my bike serviced???

I purchase my first big bike a few weeks ago, a Honda CBR 600 FX 1999. It has around 23000 miles on the clock and when i was negotiating the price with the dealer i got them to do a full service before i recieved it.

My question is how often should i get it serviced? And at what milage should i get it serviced??

well I imagine you haven't read the manual yet? Its all in there.

Some items are general checking for wear - like tyres and chain.

Some items are required replacements like spark plugs and air/oil filters etc.

have a read its worth getting to know the bike that way by reading the manual

How will i know when the spark plug etc need replacing?

It'll say check/replace sparkplugs every so many miles/so many years in the manual. You can always do a google search for your bikes service intervals.

If it starts misfiring you need to change the plugs.

I was told between 3000-4000 miles between servicing.... any more than that and the oil doesn't get the chance to break down properly and can end up doing more damage.... although what would they know in the bike shop

I wouldn't even bother taking it to a bike shop, learn to do it yourself and grin like a cheshire cat when you save £££'s

I do a oil and filter change every 6 months (1000 - 2000 miles) which costs around £12 using semi synthetic. I do the plugs, air/fuel filters when needed or by man schedule whichever is sooner.

Do all my bikes / cars like this and have never had a problem. My Citroen C4 is on 105,000 miles, Comet is 6,000 miles and NSR which is obviously slightly different has 23,000 miles on the clock.

Would say the most important engine-related service is change motor oil and oil filter at the same time, at least once a year more often if mileage demands it.
Used to do so twice a year (autumn and spring) for the car. Once year (spring) usually enough for fair weather bike.

Never trusted garages to actually replace filter as well - if you do get a garage to do it, mark the existing filter somehow so you can tell the same filter is there after service, and look at the oil too afterwards.
