When Watchdog covered this there were two out of all the companies featured who were behaving ethically (offereing a fair market price), the others were utter parasitic defrauding scum. I have no idea now which were which.

They're dispicable cunts. Disgusting fuckfaces with too much money as it is ripping off offering the opportunity for desperate folk who have fuck all but to sell their often sentimental precious metals to a sleazy bald fuckface for way less than market value.

Just like everything else on the internet.

I wonder what would happen if companies like this were banned and a public alternative was made. You can sell your gold if you want but it can only be bought by the government to be put in reserves.

It's not called a precious metal without reason and with advancements in technology it's probably not a bad idea to have a stockpile to dig into when we need to.

More legislation, handing more control to to the govt, why not just slice our balls off and deliver them to Number 10.

If people are dumb enough to fall for these dodgy companies, tough luck. If I did something that stupid I would consider it my own fault, not expect there to be a govt body I could turn too. If I wanted revenge against said companies, I would arrange that myself, not go crying to some official body.

How can we complain about the erosion of personal freedom (which seems to be a popular topic here) if we still offer the knee-jerk reaction of 'ban it', 'get the govt involved', 'more laws, more laws'?

If the people don't accept responsibility for their actions, then they deserve the suffocating nanny state they currently have. The State should be the servant of the people, not their master.

No.

They're dodgy companies playing with an important natural resource for their own benefit.

What happens in 50-100 years we create some new fantastic technology but oh no! it needs a lot of gold and it's not for a profit driven project. I'm sure those private companies would sell it back but I can't imagine them making it cheap.

Nonsense, these companies are not stockpiling gold, they almost certainly sell it on at a decent profit very quickly, it would need a very paranoid conspiracy theorist to imagine they have a sinister long-term plan to corner the market in precious metals.

Businesses do make long term plans and it doesn't take a big conspiracy theory to think that. Gold is only going to get more valuable in the future, you can't say the same thing about currency.

You believe what you want to believe, and I will continue to believe that these companies are get-rich-quick fly-by-night operations. Very few, if any, conspiracy theories stand up to much serious scrutiny.

How does this fall into any sort of conspiracy theory? It makes sense that they are buying it to increase their stocks.

It doesn't even matter if they are or not, we should be.

+ we can get rid of the sleazy bald guy.

No, I am no more wrong than you are, and probably a lot more right than you are Twisted Evil

I do not for one second consider these gold-buying companies to have a long-term strategy, they are simply buying a commodity cheaply and selling it more profitably.

If you really believe that they are stockpiling gold (and if they were, I doubt that they would be getting much of it by buying bits of jewelry), then let's meet up in your proposed 50-60 years and see if the as-yet undiscovered technology you mention has been discovered and that these companies have cornered the market in gold world-wide. If and when that happens, I shall concede that you were right all along. Until then, it is just pissing in the wind. Of course, in 50-60 years I for one will be long dead, so the agreement will have to found with my heirs.

Even if they don't have a long term strategy we should still tell them to piss off and take control of it.

There are rumours floating around about Afghanistan and China sitting on top of huge untapped veins of precious metals but until gold suddenly becomes a lot more abundant it's worth hoarding what we can.

It's very useful, not just pretty to look at.

We already have such a system, its called notification, if you buy more than £9000 of gold in one year HMRC has to be informed. At which when TSHTF the police and armed forces know who's doors to kick down and take it from you.

Executive Order 6102 in the USA banned people from owning gold and the government confiscated it..... funilly enough a lot of people voluntarily gave their gold to the government. As there was a mentality of for the greater good.

As recent as 1998 Korea when it went to the IMF the people queued up voluntarily to hand in their gold. It meant the IMF loan was paid off in 1/3 of the time it would normally have taken.

Nah if they did they would simply not tell anybody about it and dump US$ soon as possible. The price of gold is being suppressed anyway, the number of shorts in the market for paper gold is way too high such that there is 5-10 times as much gold sold than can be delivered.

Hi

Gold in itself is hideously over valued. Has a few real uses (electronics mainly) but supplies far in excess of that requirement. It is just used as a safe investment, with people gambling it will be worth the same or more in the future. The value of gold has little to do with supply and demand for it to be used. No better than gambling on the price of magic beans.

Sure there might be some technology that needs it in great quantity in the future. Just as there could be for copper, titanium, platinum, silver or any other random material. Hardly like we can stock pile quantities of all random materials in the hope that we will find a use for them and their future value will rocket.

All the best

Keith

I beg to differ when you consider this one fact.

The governments of the world have a printing press and they have shown they are not afraid of using it. Remember Ben Benake talking about QE2? Less than one month later QE3 is already being considered. Sure gold is a fiat currency, but it is less worse than paper money which can and will be printed into oblivion.

Even Merkel is thinking about printng, the debts are simply too big to pay off conventionally other than via printing. The UK 5 trn debt is unpayable other than via inflation. The central banks give the illusion that they can control it and not go Harare, except this is an illusion. Such events all happen incredibly quickly and are a massive surprise.

I have yet to see a machine print gold. You'll do ok though as you have a ton of bikes, paper is about the worst thing you can have right now.

Note I keep my money in something else.

Hi

I see gold as little different to paper money. It has a value because it has a value, rather than because it has any use. Not like it can be used for many practical uses beyond a tiny bit for electronics, and as such its real value is pretty low.

Sure you can't just print gold, but you can just dig it up in certain areas (just like diamonds).

Not sure I would classify it as a fiat currency though. Probably more closely related to a stock market bubble, going up in value because people see it going up in value so try to buy it.

All the best

Keith

Sure but as said paper is even worse as you don't have to go out and dig you turn on the printing presses and boom your £10 purchasing power drops like a stone and most people don't notice as well which encourages MORE printing. Gold has been around 2000 years. Silver 4500. Unbacked paper money has never survived more than 75 years as the lure of the printing press is too much.

Hi

Agree, but the paper money value is related to the output of the controlling country. Print 50% more money and you just devalue it.

Gold isn't even related to that. It has nothing to back it up. Its cost has bubbled way beyond its real value, when in reality its value is little different to some ClickMango shares.

All the best
