Time to take a bite of the humble pie.... Embarassed

For some unknown reason the rear lights on my 1993 mk1 Cagiva Mito have stopped working...

At the moment I only have 3 working lights:
-right side(when facing forwards/sitting on bike) full beam light,
-rear left and right brake lights.

The dipped bulb either is blown/doesn't work and neither do either of the 2 sidelights and the rear lights don't work.

All 4 indicators work fine and the light comes on on the speedo.


I replaced the rear bulbs yesterday with new (and correct) bulbs, as having rear lights was my main concern, but to no joy.

I'm currently rather poor so will have to wait until mid next week to get new headlight/ sidelight bulbs (yes I cant afford £1.99 for bulbs).

I checked the wiring that I could see on the rear of the bike and everything was connected/ intact, I was wondering if anyone knew of any reason why it may not work?

It may be unrelated/ may not be, but I looked at the indicator relay today and there is 3 wires going to it (all 3 heatshrink wrapped together) but only 2 are connected, possibly wrong relay? not creating correct circuit thus meaning rear lights don't work?
Can't see how the indicator relay plays a part in the rear lights working, but it's a possibility I thought of.


I've got the bike going into my mates college for his tutor/ highest level students to have a look at as it's free, but If I can fix it it's one less thing to worry about.

Any ideas/ knowledge? Thumbs Up
I've downloaded the manual and also a workshop manual too, but has no information about the issue... Thinking

Not saying it will do anything but it might help.

Open up the connections, and have a look at the contacts. They may be a bit corroded. Get a bit of sandpaper and just take off most of the corrosion. It may also be an idea to make new connections.

But, saying that, I have heard mito's are bad for electrics and so it may be something similar to other issues not what I have said.

Yay, electrical diagnosis, every-bodies favourite subject (not)

Electrical diagnosis 101.

A multimeter will make this job a huge amount easier, so beg borrow or steal one.

First thing is to set it to the right setting (usually the 20V setting I think) Then put one side on the live side and one on the earth side and see if you get 12V running across it with the lights on. Considering the lights aren't working I would assume you wont, but best to start with the simple things.

Next thing you will want to set it to the ohms setting to check the resistance of the wires, you want as close to zero as possible. You will need a wiring diagram which should be somewhere in your manual. You need to follow each side of the lighting circuit and test the wiring all the way along, one wire at each end of each section of wire, until you find one with an unusually high resistance. This is probably the bugger that's causing the issues.

Next thing is to get a new section of wire. Hold it or somehow secure it to the connectors at each end of the accused dodgy section and check that the light of working. This confirms that that was the dodge wire.

Finally, remove the broken wire and solder in the new section of wire and wrap it properly with heat shrink or electrical tape.



Thinking Haven't had to do that in a while so if one of the usual oracles comes a long and corrects me then so be it.

Yup fuses checked and they're fine.

I've just got to find the time to work on her.

Luckily/unluckily I have work today and tomorrow (both shifts finishing at midnight... Confused )
And on monday I'm having her looked at, but I was wondering if anyone had had the same problem in the past.

Right, I've fixed the front dipped light, was just a blown bulb.
Gotta do sidelights and then the rear lights too, but they will have to wait until tomorrow.

See attached for state of the bulb...

not sure, this is the first time I've looked at the lights.

I did notice on the wiring that someone has cut the wire and replaced it with what looks like audio speaker wire and not even used male/female connectors, just insulating tape and twisted the wires together!!

I think I will probably just buy a complete wiring loom for the whole bike and redo everything, much easier than finding specific parts/ pieces of wire.

For now I'm off to work with full beams, now that I have 2 lights working... Confused

Finally!! The mito is running properly again!

Took her to my mates college, and for free, had the carb timing sorted and perfected, got all the lights fixed, got some fresh putoline oil for the engine, and some new castrol for the 2 stroke.
Also have new brake pads, new lights all round, new spark plug, complete set of new and matching nuts and bolts all over. Smile

Happy times. Smile Best part is it was free! Very Happy Thumbs Up

there is a lot of good info over on 125ccsbs, but its members tend to be ... young etc. & theres a few idiots in there,,,
some of the rs guys who came over back when 125s' were kicked out of the aprilia forum etc are fairly knowledgable.
most of the others are *****'s
the mito subsection is, however, the exception to the rule, mito owners tend to be a bit more mature,lol

Explain the above statement. Please, I really need to know about carb timing as it's something I've never come across in nearly 20 years of fucking about with two strokes.


I mean't to say ignition timing, at the time I was on here using my mobile and forgot what I was typing/ not really paying attention.
