Somebody comes to you and offers you an unsecured loan for £30,000 when you're in late teens/early twenties.

This is for a project to be spread over the next three years, using the absolutely best advisory and creative facilities. You choose the facilities.

At the end of the project, the return for the project can be from relatively small up to £150,000/£200,000 a year, depending on your choice and working of the project. The loan is only repayable if the return is above just over £20,000.

What are peoples thoughts? Good opportunity?

Nearly got me there, in fact you did, well done.

You won't earn 150k, you won't even earn 30k.

But you will have sex and drink a lot, oh and there is computer games there.

You will be fully qualfied to say "like" every third fucking word.

You'll delay having to grow up for 3 years.

Rock and/or roll.

Going to uni, is a way to prove what you are capable of. There is no point doing it unless you are going to put a bit of work in to achieve good grades.

A lot of courses are a waste of time. A lot of people waste their time at uni by not applying themselves even if they did get onto a good course (me).

Having said that, if you only have to pay it back if you get a decentish job, you havent got much to lose really.

If this is uni you are on about, then fairplay at good wording.

If this is actually some business thing, then I want in. Laughing

It is uni indeed!

But when put into a business sense... it sounds like a good investment eh!

Remember, if you don't think you'll make back a 6 figure salary, you don't have to go.

Not so sure it does, as you don't have any alternative choice comparison. There is always an alternative choice, which in this case would involve an immediate reward, no debt, and depending on your choice, potentially the same ultimate reward.

For a pop culture example just look at the Apprentice finalists - none of those have a degree, and all are successful.

Divide your estimates by 10 and you have a more accurate figure of starting salaries. Depending on your field, if like mine (engineering/science) you could start on 25k - 28k depending on where you go. However without the degree you'd be lucky to start in the same places with an 11k salary.

Granted in ten or so years I could start hitting the 6 figure salaries if I work had and prove my worth.. But its not a simple task to get to that kind of a wage.

Hi

I work in IT, and in that whether you have a degree or not the chances of getting a 6 figure salary are pretty close to zero. Starting salary for someone with a degree is likely to be around £20k outside London and likely to take a good few years to reach £30k. Unless you are exceptionally good the only way you are going to get even 2/3 of the way to a 6 figure salary is in senior management.

All the best

Keith

Perhaps, in that case, they shouldn't bother going to uni?

How would they get the skills that those who have a degree will have obtained? And if they did somehow gather the same level of knowledge how would they prove it?

Hi

I would say that in IT for most areas the skills from a degree are not required. The place my better half works does require a degree for trainees in IT but doesn't really care what that degree is in. An IT related degree is no advantage, with the skills gained from such a degree not viewed as particularly useful.

Suspect the same is true of most areas. A degree is just asked for as a lazy way of thinning down the number of applicants. Getting people to spend 3 years and a hell of a lot of money doing a degree just to save a few minutes of the recruiters time seems fairly pointless.

In a lot of areas the skills come down to an aptitude (ie a people manager needs decent people skills which can't really be taught). Having a degree doesn't really confirm whether the person has an aptitude for it or not.

All the best

Keith

This makes you come across as very nieve. If you're considering Uni, you're not a child anymore. Take a reality check.

You should go to Uni to further study an area you have great interest, not just the finanical gain.

Why people continue to debate this, I don't know.

A lot of degrees are useful and necessary for getting into some professions.

On the other hand, a lot of degrees are a complete and utter waste of time.

Some degrees just naturally lead to a lot of money

Some degrees aren't worth the paper they're written on.

You can't put percentages on any of the above so stop trying to debate about it. Some of you have sour grapes about having a degree/not having a degree, it's fairly evident.

End fo.

I'm sure it's a bit more than a few quid a month. I pay back student loans at just over £200 a month these days. And that's the lowest I can pay as I understand.

I enjoy Uni, but then the NHS pays for my course Smile But then i work part time in the NHS who pay me and tax me. But then my taxe's go to the NHS. And i'm now confusing myself Laughing

Either way, my degree will mean i earn £30,000 a year eventually if i can be bothered to upgrade from a Band 5 Nurse and go up the ladder.

How many long qualified NHS nurses have a degree?

Not too many, but anyone who has qualified in the last 20 years has has to go to uni for 3 years to get a diploma.

The thing with getting trained by a company (and part the reason I didn't do an engineering apprenticeship) is that they will teach you the skills you need to work for them, and thats about it. In a few years if you decide to move elsewhere you may not have the appropriate skills for other jobs.

In my degree I've learnt a lot in practical electronics and designing embedded microprocessor systems as well as a large amount of software engineering. The company I currently work for, and will be working for when I finish my degree only requires the software engineering aspect of my degree, however if I decided I wanted to move into a hardware field I'd still have the appropriate skills to do so. If I took them on their apprenticeship role I'd have the software skills, and even then the software stuff I use there is only a subsection of what I know.
