What is going on with insurance at the moment?

Had some great quotes last year with 2 years NCB. Got some slightly better quotes this year, but the excess on all quotes now is £500, compared to £250 last year.

Had a check on MSE and read that nearly all of the comparison sites now only list an excess of £500.

What's the deal?

Beats me. Presumably they're operating on the hidden cost principle - looks cheap up front, until you have to claim. Maybe there's been a rash of dropped-bike claims.

You may be able to get insurance for your excess. A mate did this - paid £30 to the insurer which covered the £300 excess of the underwriter, then claimed on his fully comp for damage caused by dropping his bike (3 times Wink )

Got his bike back to mint effectively for £30 plus whatever he gets stung with in future years for claiming. Personally I think that'll end up costing him way more than it would have cost to buy the parts and sort it himself, but each to their own.
