Well thats what we were told back in 2000, due to 'global warming'. Of course that hasnt happened, so now they have resorted to calling the bogeyman 'climate change' instead.

Here's the article which shows that predicting the future is a bit more tricky than you might think.

At no time was I under the illusion (confusion?) that Global Warming meant our 'local' weather was going to "make us like barbados Thumbs Up ".

Anyone who actually bothered to read/try to understand the effects of global warming knew that it meant more rain and colder weather for the UK.

The reason they are now calling it climate change is because the term 'global warming' caused so much confusion.

It was supposed to give more long hot dry spells in the summer.
The BBC ran pieces about how we should dig up lawns and rosebeds and put in Meditteranean plants to tolerate drought.

They said the Scottish ski industry was doomed and not worthy of investment as snow was becoming so unreliable, and it would only get worse.

The current name is 'Climate Disruption'.
You see until the last few years there was never any bad weather.
Summer was an endless run of warm days with just an occasional shower to keep things green.
In the Winter it started snowing on Christmas Eve so rosy faced children could play with their sledges.
It only ever got 4 or 5 inches deep of course
In early February the snow began to melt and spring was always bright and breezy, becoming jolly warm by easter so you could go into the country for a long walk - and have a picnic with a big cloth spread out over grass sprinkled with buttercups and daisies.

Climate change is the biggest scam of the 21st century and a attempt by the left wing parasite governments to de-industrialize and redistribute the wealth of the western world to the thrid world begging bowls.

Climate change not global warming.

More extremes rather than mild summers and winters is what SEEMS to be happening.

Over the past 50 years, the average temperature has gone up about 1/2 a degree.

third world countries may also see it as a way of trying to stop them exploiting their natural resources

england used to be covered in trees, and chopping them all down was part of our development before the industrial revolution

yet brazil has vast amounts of valuable hardwood but isnt allowed to sell it, so it gets burnt to charcoal instead to make way for farmland

another conspiracy theory is its a way to get populations to accept some attempts to reduce dependence on fossil fuels for economic and geopolitical reasons

No, in the article it said
"David Parker, at the Hadley Centre for Climate Prediction and Research in Berkshire, says ultimately, British children could have only virtual experience of snow. Via the internet, they might wonder at polar scenes - or eventually "feel" virtual cold."

I've no idea how prestigious the Hadley centre for climate predicition and research is, but the line of global warming was pretty universal a few years ago. It's only recently that the wording has been changed to climate change.

I know that this place is prestigious
"According to Dr David Viner, a senior research scientist at the climatic research unit (CRU) of the University of East Anglia, within a few years winter snowfall will become "a very rare and exciting event"."

It's still a bit of a jump to assume that climate change is a result of activities of humans. I'm not saying its impossible, I'm saying it's unproven. It's a matter of belief.

Sunspots could be another cause of climate change.

Change is inevitable. It's not necessarily a bad thing.

So far I don't think we have enough evidence to be sure what our problems are etc.
Definitely I don't think the changes in climate we've seen are more extreme previously recorded over the last few thousand years.

Something bikers notice is how much warmer built up areas are day and night, especially in summer.
All the solid stuff holds far more heat than countryside.
I really don't think enough allowance is made for this in the 'recorded' warming which is being used to project future trends.

Surprisingly the way they calculate how much the record for any place should be changed - to account for that area becoming more built up - is to compare the number of lights at night.
This seems likley to give wild inaccuracies for some locations.

I was under the impression that the warming was causing the ice caps to melt, and with the difference in water level and temp it was pushing the gulf stream away from us which was in turn going to turn things 'a bit siberian'.

Certainly seems to be something up recently - I mean -22 one week then +8 the next isn't normal for this time of year!

climate change, unfortunatly, is just another coined phrase used to be able to tax us on the specific emmisions of our vehicles. i have not seen any solid evidence that CO2 IS the factor affecting the global climate. its a blatant tax that no one has properly questioned. i still think vehicular tax should be added to fuel so someone who does 30k a year in their company citroen c1 that pays £20 a year roadtax atthe moment will have to pay more then for instance me in my audi a6 as i only do 2k a year in it through the winter. how is it fair that i pay 10x as much and the rest just to be on the same road?

Hot summers and often quite cold winter bits.... sounds like Spain Smile.

Anyway, oddly enough, the research says "everything about normal here" doesn't get good press because the people aren't interested - they're interested in big scare stories, so they are the ones that get the publicity.

Unfortunately we don't get the hot summers where I live. We get a week or too where it's roasting then that's it. Laughing

According to your profile, you live in Wales.

It's all relative, Mr Stu has been alive a handful of years, how long has the planet been here. If the Thames froze over can you imagine the doomsday headlines, "climate change proved!!!" and so on. Yet it was doing just that a hundred odd years ago for a long time. Things change, the climate is not just going to remain constant forever, pointless arguing it though because there are hundreds of thousands of people paid a lot of money to investigate it all and produce bogus statistics and headlines constantly.

I couldn't give a flying feck about global warming climate change or whatever they want to call it. Am going to make the most of my life while I still can.

Now, where did I leave those last few horse powers lying around?

Hi

Calling it climate change instead of global warming has been going on for at least a decade. But not sure the weather we are having is that unusual (more likely the weather have had before that was unusual).

Just under 20 yeas ago the NEC show was canceled due to sudden snow (and about the same amount as we just had). About 30 years ago I was in NI for Christmas and got stranded due to the snow with flights canceled, and even once I got back landed up staying with relatives in London for a few days until the trains started running again. Few years before that the snow was deep enough to cut off the village my father lived in in Yorkshire (and it wasn't a remote village or a hilly area).

silky666 wrote:

Yes, but the reason for this is that melting ice caps would be liable to stop the gulf stream that the UK relies on for milder weather than other countries of a similar latitude. No sign of the gulf stream being affected though. What we do get is every warm or cold event being used as evidence of climate change.

We regularly get claims of record breaking weather, but often the records that they are breaking don't go back that far. We only have about 30 years of accurate temperature measurement (from satellites, raw data here), with before that the figures relying on ground stations which were manual, very open to human error and very prone to urban heat island effects.

Basic theory of global warming is sound. Trouble is that most of the claimed warming is from assumed positive feedback on the back of the actual warming.

All the best

Keith
