Snow "socks" for cars ?

Has anyone ever tried SNOW SOCKS for cars??

They appear similar to chains, except easier to store / fit and only about £50.

Looks like a good idea – and uncle google seems to suggest they work well, but not sure I’m convinced !?!?

i haven't tried that particular brand but tried a very similar thing on a mountain bus, (i was driving the ski team up the mountain)
and depending on the snow, they were as good as chains on snow, but got ripped to pieces on gravel, as you'd expect,

They're getting a lot of love over on Pistonheads this year (several threads in General Gassing). Only one person's reported problems (and there seems to be some doubt about their idea of how to use them....).

Downsides appear to be RWD really needs 2 pairs for steering and braking safely; also they do wear quickly on tarmac if you can't be bothered to stop and remove them.

I've got 2 sets in my BMW's boot but no chance to try them out yet

All the council and gas company vans,etc have them up here.

I noticed them last week on my 8.8 mile walk from work back home (whilst leaving my car at work).

They are uselss if you are stuck in miles upon miles of gridlocked traffic like it was like up here last week.

i bought some snow chains for my ka, used them a few weeks ago to get into town ( about 3 miles all back roads), absolute great, took me mins to fit and did the job grand. they sell on ebay for about 30 quid..

few people at work have bought some on my recc and we'll need them come thursday

Pretty sure snow chains are illegal in the uk, as they can damage the roads and the government refuse to spend any money fixing them at the best of times.
As above though, the socks are pretty good, but they dont last. Better off just getting a decent set of winter tyres on.

Yeah, looked them up and they are legal on snow covered roads. But if you use them on a main road that has been ploughed/gritted/used regular where theres no snow then you could get done. It must be a right ballache taking them on and off all the time, so again, for winter I think winter tyres would be best. Put them on when the weather gets cold and forget for a few months.

Snow sock update:

4" - 6" in my bit Wales overnight. My BMW (famously not the best machine on snow....) managed to get me to work just fine with the socks on - 14 miles on not very big roads which had had little traffic on.

Particularly noticable that I wasn't slip-sliding my way up the millions of little hills like unlike most other 2wd cars I saw

Do you think they would last the whole winter? Do you have them on the front and back tyres?

They've gone ever so slightly hairy (nearside rear's gone a bit more hairy than the others) and gained a few little tucks and wrinkles which is probably no bad thing.

I've got a set each end, as being able to accelerate but not steer or stop doesn't appeal (at least, not on public roads ).


I'd say they've got a lot more miles in them which may be just as well looking at the forecast!

I'll be taking them off for the drive home though as the main routes are clear now and not covered in jack-knifed lorries etc. A-road and M-way less challenging/enjoyable than the minor roads in, but probably more sensible



Edited to add: I'm now certain they make a heck of a difference. Having driven up and down snowy hill and dale this morning with them on, I completely failed to get up a tiny gentle snowy slope onto a garage forecourt on the way home without them
