The R1's gone and my new bike is arriving Thursday, a brand new GSX-R600 K4 (blue). Very Happy Thumbs Up
I have already ordered a Harris numberplate hanger and a Harris exhaust bracket. Hmm, now should I get a race can?

Pics to follow soon. I can feel a new avatar coming on...

Nice one. Did you take one for a spin first?

Aren't race cans illegal? Wink

Very wise choise. Cool Thumbs Up Out of curiosity, did you think the R1 was too much? Or just fancy a change. Liter power too much for the road?

Hmmm, yer of course get a race can Confused . Gixxers should come with one as standard Wink

Wicked bike, enjoy it!

I sold the R1 as I wanted to free up some cash to get the car sorted initially and fancied a new bike anyway.
I went for the 600 purely for financial reasons. Cheaper to buy, cheaper to run, cheaper to insure. I've always got on well with revvy bikes so I'm looking forward to this one.

I'm thinking of getting a can with a removable baffle, it just depends on how much work needs to be done to keep the midrange power. Anyone know?

Not sure TBH, but its fuel injected, so the engine managment should change the carbouration by itself well enough, if you put a race can.

Hopefully you shouldn't notice too much difference with the can on, with stock ECU. If any.

Talk to Marjay.

With the baffles installed it had a interesting torque (back to front) L shape, peaking at about 80hp. Not great for a sports bike with over 900 ceecees.

The accursed gixxer i got flamed for 'racing' through traffic, is exactly the same as you said. He has an akropovic race exhaust with removeable baffle, one bolt to take the swine out. with it in its a gentle purr, with it out, well i sat on it ready to ride off, blipped it to 4k (it red lines at like 20 or summit) and sounded like i was grinding the nuts off, so i leapt off the throttle, then thought aaaaaaaa the baffle. Then rode off. But yeh the difference is immense, altho power wise its not really that noticeable. I havent done the mileage in and out to tell properly but id say slightly better pickup on acceleration with it out. But considering your profession id keep it in Wink

Oh and it was about 300 i think, but id imagine that was just for the can, not full system. I would ask but hes in spain atm.

Sounds like a good choice. Thumbs Up

I had Remus exhausts on my TL1000R with removable baffles, and had no problems with them in or out. They were very easy to take in and out just a simple allen key bolt. Never really got much miles in with them, but my first impressions were that they were good and were pleased with them.

Not true. Only true if the ecu takes a feedback from a lambda probe (not that common on bikes), and even then a major change to the fuel required will probably trigger a fuel injection warning light as it will be outside the pre programmed acceptable range (although just a can is not likely to do that).

All the best

So you don't recon the bike will be able to cope, ie it will alter the bikes running?

I would have though/hoped that a new 600 would have enough maps to cover a race can. I mean everyone puts race cans on their bikes...

I would put a can on and see if you can notice the difference. If a "problem" arrises get a power commander and do it the hard/expensive way.

Hi

Without a lambda probe then the ecu has no way of knowing that a race can has been fitted, so there is no way for it to compensate. Bike fuel injection systems are hardly advanced compared to those used in cars.

As to the effects of changing a baffle, I have a full Akrapovic system on the Bandit and it is all jetted up for when the baffle is removed. With the baffle in place it has a noticeable flat spot at around 3000~4000rpm, which is hideous when cold (the bike will barely pull through it except in the first gear or two). It also does slightly better on petrol with the baffle removed.

So overall the bike may well be rideable with a race can and no other changes. However it is likely to have nasty flat spots and produce less power at most revs. Although screwed up power at low revs with the same power at high revs might make it feel faster.

All the best

Keith

I'm getting confused...so forgive me if I've got this terribly wrong.

So, fitting a race can on your bike can actually do more harm than good?

I'm planning on getting a new Z750 and want to put a race (with the removable baffles) can on it, it's a streetfighter style bike after all! Will this mean it will need re-jetting or will it improve performance (as well as the look) without any further action?

If the additional cost are high for not a lot of gain is there much point fitting a race can (granted they look cooler)?

yes, especially on the new kit, Honda etc pour hundreds of hours of R& D into exhaust developement, lots of dyno time, hundreds of hours of CFD studies etc by people who really understand gas dynamics. They need to to keep the noise down while getting max power.

Some of the aftermarket people do some of this stuff with race cans, but most just make straight through absorbtion tubes full of glasspack. There are some other gains to be had from race cans, such as reduced weight, better ground clearance, better looks etc. PB did a study a while back on (I think) a CBR 6, most cans were down on power compared to stock apart from IIRC a full Yoshi race system at about £1100 Shocked If you have a full race tune, big bore, wild cams etc then a race system may help get you some gains (because the base conditions for gas flow are not what the manufacturer used for exhaust developement), but you need to spend big money to get a system that will give you positive HP gains.

The days of ripping off the stock system and bolting on a Harris race pipe, rejetting and gaining 7-10 hp are long gone.

What about on a carbed bike? My ZX-9 is running a Remus race can but I've no idea if the fuelling has been adjusted (my guess is not).

I had a T reg GSXR 600, when I fitted a remus bolt on race can, it bogged down terribly when pulling away, but like you say, when you opened it up it gave the feeling that it was really going well.

Spoke to PDQ in Slough about it and they said it is common for 600's to bog down with a race can unless you jet them.

Before fitting the Akrapovic on my R1 I asked about this and they said no problem on the R1 as it has the Exup valve which restricts exhaust gases at low revs.

My Triumph Daytona had a high level carbon can, the injection system needed re-mapping to make it work properly with the bike.

In terms of harm, I think that the result of a race can is making the fuel/air mixture a little too lean which can damage valves??? Not sure on the technicalities of it all. But I believe you have to be careful... Confused

Again, all things I have heard from different people. But aren't the remus cans notorius for not needing jetting. Maybe the can is more of a semi race can???

So the majority of bikers that have fitted an aftermarket race can on their bike are actually making their bike 'under-perform'?

(well, those that haven't re-jetted or re-mapped)

I think I'll keep with the stock for a while!

I think it varies from bike to bike.

Mine definitely performs better with the can. Feels smoother.

Wouldn't surprise me.

Mine's got a race can, dynojet kit and K&N filter all fitted by the previous owner. It went on the dyno at the Ride CBR600 day against an identical model in standard trim. Mine was 5bhp down. Laughing

Should probably get that looked at sometime. Confused

If a race can flows more air (the only way it give a power increase) and you dont supply more fuel (Either by upjetting or changing the fuel map on injected bikes) the engine fuel /air mix will start to lean out. Modern bikes tend to run on the lean side anyway in order to get through the emmission regs, changing the airflow without additional fuel just makes things worse. If you run too lean for too long several things happen -

The engine runs hot
increased risk of burning an exhaust valve
Nitrous oxide emmisions go up
increased risk of detonation (pinking)
plugs die faster

Most of these are reinforcing, so all of them tend to happen, eventually resulting in major engine damage. I have seen pistons where the crown had melted completely, all that was left was a hollow cylinder with a thick bit at the top. Shocked ( an extreme case tho, usually its an exhaust valve that goes)

Blimey - I'll thin twice about getting a can for the new bike then (when I actually get it!). Or wait til I get some more cash together and go the whole hog!

While I've got the engineer types attention - the Z750 is a de-tuned ZX9R engine, will getting some power gains be easy with a few tweeks here and there?

Thanks for the help, and thanks to Scratchy, I've learned a lot from this thread!

Don`t bother, just buy a Z1000, it will cost less than the tuning work, be more reliable and not affect your insurance (or resale value) as much.

Bugger - can't get insured on a Z1000 at the moment!

Not worth putting a race can on it and no point tuning Crying or Very sad Crying or Very sad

What will I do?
