I'm on a YBR125 at the moment, probably going to do my test around february time... soon as that's done i'd like to get a bike that actually goes! don't get me wrong, the YBR is pretty awesome as a learner, but as soon as you get on a fast road... not a chance.

So what do you guys reckon I should look at? I'm 19 now so I'll be restricted to 33bhp - not much but 3x the power I'm running at the moment! So I'm thinking a 500 twin or something that'll restrict well but still have plenty of grunt Razz

ive been looking at the kawasaki gpz500 and honda cb500s... and im 6'2" and around 80kg, so I don't reall wanna be too cramped!

I think the most popular choice is an SV650, everybody I knew who got into biking after me baring 2 got SV650's.

I think realistically it doesn't matter than much find something you like the look of and can afford. You will think it is super fast and the bees knees whatever is.

Personally I would recommend Hornets and Speed Fours and Avoid Bandits and 400 jap imports.

GPZ's and CB500 are both pretty good too though I would rather a 600+ I'm 6'5 and dwarf 500's.

My SV650 is my first big bike, I'm not thinking of changing it Cool

Apparently they "restrict well" and retain most of the bottom end grunt, but because im 29 and did DAS mine has the full 72bhp...

Plenty of mods you can do to them to improve the handling ect and by the time you get fully used to it you're restriction will be up and then you get more than double the power to play with Thumbs Up

Nobody has mentioned the Bros 400 yet...so...Honda Bros 400! It's 33bhp already so no restriction crap and I'm told they handle really nicely when they don't have decade-old tyres on them:

Sad I love my bandit. Why avoid it?

Its a lovely ride height, and forgiving, but pull back the throttle and she goes. But as said, don't worry about speed, anything you get will feel blindingly fast when compared to a commuter 125 like the YBR or the CG.

Plus, parts are cheap on a bandit too, and are widely available. Insurance seemed okay for me. Overrall, great bike and i'd highly reccomend it.

Just remember, EVERYTHING on a bigger bike costs more, so don't be surprised. You'll see yourself filling up a lot more often, and find that consumabled like tyres, chains etc all cost considerably more than they do on a 125

If you can find one in good nick with little milage, the Cb350 s is a good bike. I'm 6ft 4 and i'm not too cramped on it. Not the most powerfull thing in the world, but it is sooooo much better than a 125 Twisted Evil

I tried sitting on a new faired Sv at a dealer, and my god was it cramped! even more so than a Gsxr600 that i'd just sat on Shocked
Besides, its too much hassel to restrict, and too tempting to un-restrict Wink

I'd definitely look at either bros 400 or a 350s (sure theres probably other 33hp bikes too)

Beechbone, i'm curious. is the bros cramped at all? It actually looks quite small in the pics Thinking

Rob Thumbs Up

Although I haven't yet got a licence so haven't ridden it more than a few hundred yards I don't find it cramped at all. I'm about 6'1". However everything seems huge after the RXS100. I'll get back to you when I've done some real miles.

Bros is more or less the same bike as my NTV600 (shaft drive and an extra 200cc aside) and considering it is a commuter bike it handled pretty well to be honest. Was very comfortable and bullet proof, the NTV engine is by far one of the most reliable motorcycle engines ever built IMO.

Bros gets my vote over an SV technically not ridden either so my opinion is unbiased(ish)

(also it's a Honda not a Gay-zuki)

Silly Idea, the guy is tall this is known as a girls bike as it is so small. Plus parts are hard to come by. Anything would seem huge after the RXS. There are far better options out there.

Oh come on...I've sat on the bike so know that it's not uncomfortable Razz I've also ridden it around the block a few times. Granted it's smaller than my friend's ZX6R and other friend's SV650 but it's not tiny.

SVs aren't exactly massive and there's a huge difference between sitting on a bike and hearing from people who have spent hours in the saddle.

I'd recommend a Hornet but for the fact you might be a bit big... How about a Fazer? Try as many as you can, I tried loads before I bought my Hornet and was glad I did.

Well I've owned BOTH the Bros and the sv, I have an inside leg of 35" and coped well on both. I owned the Bros 4 years and the sv650 (curvey naked) for 9 years.

I would suggest either bike. The Bros was a sturdy as a brick and was forgiving and held the ground well, and parts were EASY to source, despite it being a grey import, because its Honda.

It's available in 400cc chain driven or 650cc shaft driven.

The sv is torquey but cheap build, but easily remedied. Thumbs Up

There are plently of bikes that are not uncomfortable to sit on for a minute, wait to you have ridden it for more than a minute before judging Thumbs Up

There are just better bikes out there, I can't think of any similar bikes that they are better than, other than the fact they are cheap.

The are incredibly lardy, and the finish is dire on them.

The easiest way for me to compare it is just look at the specs.

All dry weights BTW all specs from BIKEZ.

Speed Four,
98bhp,
170kg

Hornet 600
95bhp
178kg

Fazer 600
96bhp
187kg (faired model with ABS so will be heavier)

Bandit 650
77bhp
204kg (201 on MCN)

MCN say
The Suzuki GSF650 Bandit is a hard bike to recommend as a good investment. New bikes plummet in price and older GSF600S Bandits are almost as good on the road for a fraction of the price. A Yamaha FZS600 Fazer will comprehensively beat it in any criteria except insurance (it’s one group higher).

Which is pretty much what I am getting at.
