Just got a letter from an insurer who I don't use anymore, as my policy expired.

Saying department of transport are now checking the Motor Insurance Database with DVLA records to identify potentially uninsured vehicles.

From 2011 if there is no record of your vehicle being on the insurance database, and you havent declared it as off road (SORN) you may face prosecution.

Your vehicle could be clamped, seized, and destroyed.

The bottom of the letter says "stay insured, you can't afford not to."

Sounds a bit off to me. Very much like a threat.

For example, bikes are cheap to tax, so you could tax something the day before your insurance expires, for a year. Given that it saves messing about declaring SORN.

For the next 12 months they will hassle you about having a taxed vehicle that isn't insured, even if it is parked on your drive or in the shed.

I had the same last week. I filed it with the tv license letter on the bonfire.

Hi

Yep. Seems utterly pointless. Not going to do a thing about uninsured drivers.

Pity some poor sod with a high VED car. Can't sort the insurance in time and you land up having to hand the tax disk in and lose ~£40 worth of VED.

All the best

Keith

Oh. It's even better than that.

If it's not on the MID and not registered SORN. The DVLA are going to send you an automatic "Fine" for £100 through the post like they currently do for unSORNed vehicles.

Shags us particularly hard, given that we tend to have multi-vehicle policies, take bikes on and off the road at the drop of a hat, plus the institutional incompetence of the DVLA. I guess we'll have to see how it shakes out in practice.

So what if you have a bike that is still taxed but not on the road (ie garaged and uninsured, say while its being rebuilt) would you have to SORN it, send of the tax disc for a refund and they reapply later?

I was going to pick up a new bike soon and leave it in the garage until my insurance is up for renewal in a few weeks so I can get a multibike policy. Good to know I guess, but I'll bet that catches a lot of unsuspecting people out.

Someone with a cynical mindset (such as myself) might go so far as to suggest that's been the idea from the outset.

Yep. That is what you will have to do to avoid getting a penalty for not doing anything wrong.

All the best

I read elsewhere that they will send out a letter and the fine would follow failing to act upon that.

I agree totally with the policy of taking un-taxed, insured, mot'd cars off the road if they are caught driving (providing common sense is used) but with everything on a database of some kind the need to register for SORN is ridiculous!

About time they scraped that rip off and hand out bigger fines for the ones driving illegally.

Oh, so thats another friggin letter that i'm going to have send off, then post, and then go through several more letters proving that the original letter was sent and that it must have been lost somewhere.

Just aggravating.
