First off when I just joined this forum I was having problems with a massive drop in speed when going into 5th gear, for some reason that seems to have kinda sorted itself. I was going along the motorway and thought I was in 4th and tried to kick up a gear only to find I was in 5th already but for some reason the speed picked up past its 65mph limit and finally stopped climbing at 77mph... still sluggish on hills though, but 4th will quite happily sit at 60.

Now, I'm sure there is a few people that have had this problem (or similar), but it seems my bike doesn't like the cold (neither do I for that matter), when the temperature went up a couple of degrees I could ride to and from work without any problems, now that the temperature has gone back down I go along the motorway and all seems fine until I have to stop and then the bike cuts out with a coughing and spluttering as I'm slowing. If this is a problem with the carb icing up is there anything I can add to the fuel? I've tried with normal unleaded and super unleaded and both of them do the same thing. Tonight I had to keep the revs up and eventually it sounded like a bag of spanners and died at the end of my road anyway (since it was 1 am I didn't want to keep trying to start it so ended up rolling along.

I went to the local bike shop and asked for something that would keep the rust to a minimum and he sold me a can of heavy duty metal protector, but it says it's chain lube, but also leaves a wax coating to prevent rust.... anyone else used this and is it safe to spray over all the rustable parts?

Anyhoo it's late and I'm off to me pit... soon

Not so sure chain lube will be a particularly great idea to prevent rust on the bike itself, sure it'll protect the metal just fine, but road crud is going to stick it it like crazy no? If you can find any on sale, get some FS365 or ACF50, both have advantages over each other but I can promise first hand that both work brilliantly assuming you keep the limitations of each in mind.

Rob Yarrr It's a Suzuki intruder 125....

Went to the local car shop (can't find a bike shop open today), and they have never heard of fuel stabiliser Confused

Will try one of those Seb, if I can find any of them.

I decided to take the air filter assembly off again and found there was water in there again, so I don't know if that might be getting sucked into the carb.

On another note, which I can't be bothered posting a new thread about (although maybe I should), I noticed the chain was a bit loose again today (second time in 6 weeks), and I tightened it up another notch, now I'm a bit worried about it stretching too much, also the last time I tightened it there was a slight knocking from the front sprocket when I was pushing the bike back, now it's knocking even louder that it's been tightened up again.

everything freezes, but fuel doesnt freeze as such until around -100'c
but im not talking about the fuel it self from freezing,
do some research on "carb icing" before you try to be a smart arse, it just makes you look like a dick

Due to the cold air you will get moisture in the filter.

Could also be suffering from carb icing due to the cold damp air.

Re. the chain, there is a tendency to fiddle with it them too much.
Over-tightening is one of the worst things you can do.

As a rough guide you want to be able to easily move it up or down in the middle a good inch when your weight is on the bike - I do this with it on the sidestand, lay over the seat and reach down to check the chain. Bear in mind some places it will be more worn so spin it round and try 3 or 4 different sections.
You will look silly: it does work.

That's what happens when you use ACF50.

for the Carb Icing, Silkolene Pro FST is the Dogs Bollocks. It starts working almost immediately and sorts it out fully. I had carb icing on my bandit, but a dash of Pro FST in the fuel sorts it right out.

Not many people sell the stuff, i get mine from Opie Oils, they dispatch it quick

I have heard that Surgical spirit from a chemist will do the same job.

Thanks for all the replies, I'll have a look around tomorrow and see if I can find some, if not then I'll have to wait till after Christmas to get some.

If only there was some way to redirect some of the heat from the engine around the carb eh Laughing
