Weird phone call regarding a virus on the computer....

My Dad just got a proper weird phone call from a 'company' called right click. I managed to press loudspeaker about half way through lol basically he said your computer has a virus at which point me and my dad are smiling thinking this could be fun to play along with...

Then he said our address. We were like how in god's name does he know that. Then gave us instructions on how to 'find' the apparent virus and told us to give him a call back.

We could hardly understand a word he was saying for most of it though. What was quite scary is that he said the virus was stopping people connecting to the internet, and as soon as I came to go online... Random connection problems. Now it is all fine and back to normal, didn't give him any info and haven't followed his instructions. Anti-virus scan seems to think everything is all gravy, weird.

A thought crossed my mind like as if somehow he could have control of something or rather and be trying to set us up anyway, weird.

Could be quite possible that if you had called back, you'd have been stung with a HUUGE phone bill. There's a few of these scams doing the rounds at the moment.

It's easy enough to get your address from ukinfo disc or similar.

Or they could have just looked you up in the phone book.

Scam.

They'll try and get a credit card payment out of you, tell 'em to get fucked (and might be worth getting what details you can and reporting it to trading standards, if you can be arsed).

It's not beyond the realms of possibility that you've been infected and it phones home, but botnets work best when undetected so it's not an obvious route. Cheaper to randomly ring numbers than it is to hire time on a malware run, I reckon.

Happened to parent's friend. They got a phone call from 'Microsoft' to tell them that they had a virus. The person on the phone then got control of the computer and it was 'taken over'. Made me laugh but none computer savvy people fall for it.

AFAIK that only applies if the number you are ringing is registered to a company/whatnot in the UK, if it's an overseas number then they can charge whatever they please.

I had this call.
He asked for the owner of the computer.
I asked, which one?
He said the computer. So i said, there are 3, which one?
To which he replied, the Compuder please sir.
Idiot.
So i asked his name
Max, Smith
Yeah, pretty average indian name right?
I asked him to spell it, he had trouble doing that. Then when he was going to speak some more i told him to go away and hung up.
I can't believe he had no shame, i mean, not even allowed to use your own name?
He's a nothing, fucking unimportant. What a waste of a human life.

I got a scammer once, we don't get many since we're on TPS, so I decided to have a bit of fun with him. Told him I was busy working on a high and very unstable roof, but I was interested in his deal. Halfway through his chatter I made it sound like I was falling and then hitting the ground with a loud thump. Then I croaked into the phone, telling him I desperately needed an ambulance.

Despite that, the bastid still kept trying to scam me.
