According to the MCN, Mod 1, the off road portion of the bike test is to be scrapped and replaced with a single on-road test by the end of next year. That's that then, I'm buying a 125, and fucking around on that until the single test becomes available. Fuck doing Mod 1 again.

And it means there can me more test centres and I won't have to go all the way to bleedin' Rotherham either! Result.

But what a waste of £77m. I could've had some of that...

I agree, Mod 1 was pish, but I still failed. No margin for error whatsoever. I would've passed if the speeds had been based on UK speed limits, not European ones...

What's your excuse? You were riding a shagged out wreck that shouldn't be on the road, or you couldn't handle the complex task of twisting the throttle?

It seems to me that Mod 1 did a pretty good job of weeding out the people that shouldn't be riding solo yet. Have a special Christmas gift - my first ever Middle Finger

Woah! harsh Laughing
I may have failed twice but i'd like to think that doesnt mean that i 'shouldn't ride solo' as you put it. Some bikes dont do as well as others getting up to 31 mph in that distance. Both times i failed was because i was doing 30 rather than 31. that was on an 07 YBR from the riding school. When i changed schools they had an 09 ybr which got 'it' up (giggetty) no problem Wink

Rob, you really should have bought my Gs. at least i'd know what was happening with it Sad

Some people had 100mile + journeys just to do their mod 1's, fuck that for a game of soldiers. Imagine riding all that way and messing up and failing..then having to ride home again pissed off.

For me it was an 80 mile trip until recently, but now there is a more local one (Poole) so it's not so bad. I just haven't got around to/can't afford to do my full test right now.

Should have bought Chinese-branded then. Razz

Actually, no joking around. If my HN125-8 can make 50kph, any 'proper' bike can too. Otherwise, why on earth are you paying two or times as much for it?

Round the bend in 2nd. Peg it in 2nd. Don't change up, don't check the speedo. If you or your bike can't manage that, there's something wrong. I sympathise if you have to travel a long distance to fail, but nobody is responsible for that failure but you.

Look, serious face. Neutral

+1 having passed a mod 1 easily on the HN, 52 and 53 kph.

I personally like the moduled tests. It makes everything easier because you're not having to take any notice of traffic etc. and if you can't PISS the swerve / stop, you shouldn't be allowed near a pedal bike never mind a motorbike IMO. It worries me that people struggle with the control side of it tbh

Do have to agree. As an instructor, no one got put forward for thier tests unless we were pretty confident they could pass, but students still came back with fails.

Its like the MOT test. Its not a garantee that a vehicle is or is likely to remain road-worthy for the entire duration of the certs validity, merely that on the day of the test, everything worked satisfactorily.

Some students that REALLY ought not be on the road, ace thier test. Others that have no reason why they shouldn't have a full licence some-times struggle.

For some its the artificiality of testing; its not real, so they dont perform like they would 'for real'. Many are wound up, tense and nervouse and under-perform, go to pieces, over-perform, or just cock it up.

Some-times its 'just' the examiner having reservations, becouse of the way the student 'presents'.

Tis a shitter when folk fail, but it happens, and you just have to go back, and try again. Just getting a test apointment does not mean you are going to pass!

Mmm, fair points. I'd have been hacked off too if I'd not made the 50kph due to bad conditions. Mod 1 is actually great if you've got a local centre and are sitting on your own 125 so there's no extra costs, but I do tend to forget that's a minority position - most candidates are paying through the nose to fail on someone else's bike.

Middle Finger retracted - I do sympathise with your plight, I'd just really rather that we didn't have yet another drop off in candidates now that the end of Mod 1 is in sight. I'm not sure the industry can really take many more kicks up the tailpipe.

own bike or not, costly or not, you should be able to do it in order to receive a license IMO.

"I'm sorry I killed your child ma'am, but at least I didn't have to re-take my mod1 eh, few extra quid in my pocket... tenner settle it between us?"

somehow i can't see that working

I don't see what the big celebration is on this subject. You still have to do your manoeuvres (emergency stop, turn in the road) but now they have to be on the road instead of on a nice deserted piece of tarmac. The only real up-side is that there's now no swerve to do.

I think having it as two test, while more expensive, takes some of the pressure off. I know some people on here have talked about getting the mod 1 out of the way so they can just concentrate on the easier mod 2 test. Now you will face one hard test, instead of 2 easier ones.

Sure, it's swings and roundabouts. On the bright side, Royston Vaseyites won't have to ride an hour to get to an Mod 1 centre if there's a Local Examiner For Local People nearby, plus naturally cautious(*) candidates won't get shafted over 1kph in the swerve and stop.

As someone who has gone through the whole system in the last 12 months, I can't really see why anyone be against Mod1.

I started riding bikes when I was 17, with no training whatsoever, and am surprised I survived to be honest Wink

The CBT and Mod 1 appears to be a logical progression before presenting yourself for the 'real' test.

If you can't pass Mod1, then as someone else pointed out, you really shouldn't be on the road. There is nothing difficult or out of the ordinary in it. OK, it's all a bit artificial to ensure it all fits into their patch of tarmac, but the tasks you're given all relate to real world riding.

I got up to speed on a shagged out old CG, with my fat arse on it, so I can't see how anyone can make a fuss about not reaching 50km/h.
It's all about technique.

You'll never ride on a better road surface than on the test area, and if you have problems on that, then god halp ya on the crappy UK roads!

I hadn't been on a bike for around 15 years when I started the process last march, but managed to do theory,CBT, and Mod 1 in 3 days(on both 125 and 500)so if you set your mind to it, and have the right attitude, then you'll sail through.

And as for you all moaning about having to travelmto get to a test centre; Well I drove over from Germany to do my training!! Twice in fact, as I couldn't get a Mod 2 date before I started my next job, and had to come over in october to do Mod2...

Get some decent training, and you won't have any problems at all...fuck me, if I can do it, anyone can

I'm in favour of Mod 1, but it demonstrably put a lot of people off getting into biking.

Anyway, following review, the latest DSA position is that they may trial sending examiners out to training centres to do a slow speed test there, prior to the on-road. Sort of a Mod 0.75.

Whatever they go with, I just hope that it's perceived as being easier, so we get more candidates coming through.

I enjoyed learning the mod one IMO. It allowed me plenty of time to adjust from my RS125 to the ER6N.

It was certainly nerve racking being watched so closely.

Pushing the bike backwards from one box to another and stuff or doing cones and hoping not to drop any was good fun. The figure 8 was pretty good too, and the U turn! The swerve wasn't really hard for me on a big bike, but practicing it helped a lot with thorottle control, I was told to drop the revs after always and put the front wheel in the box at the end, so it did teach me precision control and braking.

The main thing was not ever forgetting your shoulder checks in the mod 1, but that gets you prepared to do it all the time on the mod 2!

I guess having one test again makes things easier in some ways, I mean the swerve test has caught a fair few people out! Not sure if the random U turn during the route is a confidence booster or not? I guess if you don't fuck that up then it is all good, but if you do then ouch!

I understand completely the Idea of MOD1.

But the fact that it is so strict is very demoralising. Heck the Italian's version of MOD1 just consists of a turn, a slalomn and 1 figure of eight. How are they allowed to do just that, when we- technically governed by the same dictatorship that is the EU that is meant to make us all under the same umbrella, have a different set of rules!?!

That's the point about EU rules, they are not fair, not safety conscious, they are only there to gain more and more money. Take these new driving licences- every decade you have to renew? WTF That is exactly why my dad decides to keep his licence from 1977. He sees no point in the card and no point in paying more money for something which he has effectivly paid more than it's worth in the first place.

Same here - big difference riding to the test centre on the NSR then jumping on a ZZR6 to do the test... took mine in feb when it was still snowy and everywhere was covered in frozen bloody leaves, as i came out of the long bend ready for the swerve (or stop, cant remember which) i gave it some beans and had the back end step out for what felt like 5 seconds (in reality, probably just a tiny slip), still got up to speed and passed fine though - definately my first brown trouser moment on a big bike !

I'm right, you're right, we're all right. I've rebooked Mod1. I can't wait for the government/europe to make its mind up, I want to be fully passed before this summer. Who was I kidding? It's on again. Thanks for the motivation.
