Following on from the thread someone posted about being caught in a 30 zone at 73mph and the general view being that is pushing the limits too much, what is your maximum limits to your speeding in each different zones on a typical road with limits.

* 20mph - Will not really be doing much more than 35 in these is normally quite annoying because of the speed bumps, but more seriously they are normally there for a specific reason like being a residential road or town centre or something. But do go above that on slight few occasions when I view it to be safe enough to like the road and pavement being clear etc.

* 30mph - Not more than 50 mostly, do push it more rarely on the roads same as in a 20 zone but just a bit more pushing than a 20. Higher risk than a 20 as there is more traffic and stuff around than a 20 as well.
* 40mph - About 70 I think will happily do more if I think is okay as lots of duel carriage ways are a 40 when they're in on the edge of a town or something so no more dangerous than lots of other ones which are a 70 zone.
* 50mph - I think around 80 depending on the road but probably on most not much more than 70 in general standards of these roads.
* 60mph - Around 90 but not really above 70 on lots as they're still single carriage which makes too high too dangerous and risky so not really worth it.
* 70mph - Not more than 110 but generally use 100 as a maximum as above that is ban territory so not worth sitting at for sustained periods of time. Will push it as much as I feel is okay which on some (normally empty duel carriage ways rather than motorways) is to the limit of the bike but not for long at all and not when there is any traffic about really as too risky and higher risk of getting caught and getting very very badly done for it.

Have lots of times when entering a speed limit change not worried about the drop meant to be being sudden but have just coasted or not continued accelerating when entering it so depends what limit I'm coming down from and to as to how much I have pushed a limit whilst entering but quite a lot is the answer.

I dont have a general rule as to speeds. give me a 30 limit with a straight wide road in good weather, no speed cameras or other cars, and i shall have the bike balls out down it.

The only speed limits i have respect for are those emposed to to poor road conditions, schools, blind corners, on consealed access.
I know where all of those are locally and slow down accordingly, but when traveling outside of my local area i keep it within 10mph of the limit, just incase i dont spot a speed camera, or police car.

I'm starting to think I'm a pretty slow biker!

20 Zone - No more than 20-25 mph (due to the usual speed bumps in this zone)

30 Zone - Usually 30-35, No more then 40mph

40 Zone - Usually 40-45, No more than 50mph

50/60 Zones - Usually about 5-10 mph over, but not more than 10.

70 mph - Usually hang around 80 mph on the motorway. If it's dead then I'll have a burst at around 90-100mph. Only ever taken my bike to it's limits (140 odd mph) a handful of times as it's not worth the risk.

I'm with byke95 on this one.

Oh and any motorway road works (execpt the ones you can see the end from the start because they are only 100m long) I will stick to the limit. Reason is that you speed though those you are putting the workforce at risk and any coppers are much more likely to pull you for speeding there than speeding on the rest of the motorway. Oh and the ones round Brum are littered with speed cameras !

I'm usually within 5mph of the limit in built up areas and 10 or so in the more sprawling places like urban carriageways.

NSL depends on the road, conditions, traffic volume, familiarity, etc, but riding a 1000cc machine sometimes I like to use some of it's potential.

Although saying that, the red mist has been known to descend.

I'm with DF, in built up areas I am normally close enough to the speed limit to be able to loose enough speed to be within it if necessary, or stop in time for "little Eric chasing his football across the road".

Locally I am less reserved with my speed as I am more aware of the roads and what is likely to happen on the roads. Near blind junctions I tend to slow down - I know someone will pull out on me one day! However, where I know the road is clear and I am unlikely to meet traffic/tractors etc then I don't really bother with the speed limit at all.

Away from home where I don't know the roads, the policing or the area then I tend to stick much closer to the speed limits or the flow of the traffic.

In built up area 20/30/40 zones i stick to within 5 of the limit, 50 + it depends on the road but no more than 10 and motorways normally about 80/85, i have opened her up to about a ton + but not very often and only on empty roads.

If I'm completely honest then speed limits don't mean shit to me. I prefer to regulate my own speed depending on what's around. IMO if you rely solely on what a sign tells you then you're missing the point...

No idea.

I only really look at the speedo when :
(a) I am going for a ton (cos I don't often get beyond that, not interested really); or
(b) I spot a speed camera up ahead.

I'm probably usually over whatever the limit IS, but aren't usually going so fast that I can't drop down to the camera's limit, or at least to within its 10% over tolerance-limit (anyone know, is this little chestnut rumour or truth?)

Round town I don't bother racing about much, too many hazards.

Although, having said that ...

They REALLY need to do something about the new bit of the A13. All that nice new tarmac, big swoopy curves over and underpasses and stuff . . . and a 30mph camera'd speed limit.

Bloody spoilsports!

I don't tend to pay much attention to my speed, which sounds bad, but what I mean is that I cannot confirm that I have rules related to speed.

I try to ride to the road/conditions/weather/traffic/obstacles. Sometimes I am below the speed limit, most times I am not.

I try to be very aware and observe good safe road etiquette, which normally governs my speed.

Aside from the speed cameras that I pass every day of course. Rolling Eyes

20 - 20

30 - 30

40 - 40

50 - 50-55

60 - 60-80 - Depends on the roads and the circumstances and the conditions.

70 - 70-whatever - if it's and safe and I believe that me and others will be ok, then I'll go a bit quicker.

To be honest, I didn't really get the bike to tear around at ridiculous speeds. I can overtake stuff if it's in the way and still make progress at sensible (read: legal) speeds.

I can't understand the mentality of doing over the speed limit in built up areas. And I'm talking 20's, 30's, and 40 areas here, where people can be walking around and there can be a large build up of traffic.

Depends where I am and the conditions. I've been known to pootle along at 15mph before through residential area's but i've also done the occassional 150mph on the motorway.

If I have no idea about the roads im riding then I generally stick to the limit's as i'd rather not be caught out by a gatso or anything round the next corner.

20 - 20-25. You ALWAYS get people riding up your arse at this point which is really annoying. Nobody else seems to obey 20's.

30 - 30-35.

40 - 40-50. Have been known to push it a little more in a 40 if there are no houses and such around.

50 - This depends on the circumstances. I've seen myself full on 120mph in 50's when it's empty. There's one near me that has a 50 limit due to having a bus station there but it's closed at night. Other than that it's a massive straight really wide road that 5 cars could fit side by side across.

As soon as it says national speed limit, anything goes really. Depends on the road.

Motorways I generally tend to stay under 100mph but I go over it now and then.

It's usually the twisty roads that I give it everything. I've done big corners at full speed when clear to do so.

Generally my rules are stick to the limit in busy or populated areas.

20 - 20 or just over

30 - 30 or just over

40 - 40 or just over

50 - 50 or just over

60 - Depending on the road (bends, road surface) I do 55-62/3

70 - Haha..I can't do 70 on my bike...65 is the fastest I have been on the flat.

Any speed I think is aproperiate, if it's 1 in the morning and i'm on the motorway i'll go however fast I can get away with, at rush hour or during the day then it is obviously going to be lower. I've been down 30's at 70+ before but only when it has been safe to do so, in my opinion a lot of 30mph limits are not necessary.

I appreciate your right to do what you want, it's your licence. Seriously though, how can you say that it is ever 'safe' to do 70+ in a 30mph zone?

30 = 35max

40 = 60max depending on road width etc....

50 = 70max

National 60 = Could be anything depending on roads

70 = Could be anything depending on roads

Confused

Quite easily, watch...

I've been down 30's at 70+ before but only when it has been safe to do so.

There are plenty of 30mph roads around my area that are safe to do at 70mph, some more than others and most that aren't are quite safe in the evening. Stop bitching and enjoy the weather. Thumbs Up

Whoops, forgot to mention that I didn't mean 70mph I meant 90mph. Very Happy Thumbs Up

Cheeky Bugger! Mr. Green

Fair do's mate, like I said before it's your choice - personally I think that's bull, it's never safe to do 70 in a 30 zone. It's 30 because it's residential and if you hit someone or lose control you will kill them and yourself at that speed. Sliding down the clear carriageway/motorway at 70+ is not so bad in leathers, wrapping your spine around the various hazards (street lights, cars, people, buildings) in a 30 zone is.

I'm enjoying the weather, just in places where I'm not risking my and others' lives.

Thumbs Up

Oh well, 90, 120, it's all the same. Who cares? Very Happy

I'm with byke95 on speeds -
20 - 20-25
30 - 30-35, maybe 40 but only if it was 1am or something
40 - 40-50 but likely the lower end of that scale
50 - 50-60
60 - 60-75
70 - 70+

I've not taken the Ninja out on many nice wide fast roads yet so I've not pushed it, but I can imagine if the circumstances were right I'd go for maybe 140 tops (but don't tell my family or friends!)
Most of the time I'll stick close to whatever the limit is. No point risking it really....

I am more inclined to stick to the limit in areas I don't know incase of pedestrians, hidden turnings, speed cameras and so on.
I generally stay below the ton on the motorway for licence losing reasons.

30 limits I stick to most of the time. The rest are a bit of a lottery!
