Hi Guys new to the site so any help would be greatly appreciated!

Have left my bandit 600 96 reg over the xmas period for 2 weeks whilst i was away and it just wont start!
I have removed plugs, checked carbs ect.... and cannot understand why?

Also i was wondering, had the bike about 6 months now it only has 28k on it, is it worth starting to mod a bike of that age or would you buy a newer bike and customize that one, money is an issue at the moment but dont want to spend on my current bike if im going to lose it all, cheers guys!

Yes sorry forgot to mention the battery has had a full recharge been tested and is fine, i put it in 2nd held the clutch in and tried bumpstarting it 5 times....no luck!

as for modding: i have already had a jack up kit, twin headlights and a full exhaust system on, i was thinking more perspex oil covers ect... chroming/just general tidying up. dont want to take it too far but just wondered if it was worth it on a 96 bandit.

thanks for the replys!

First things first:
Do you have a spark ?
Is there fuel getting to the plugs ?
Plenty of compression on all cyclinders?

28k isn't much for a bandit. Mod it what ever the age, the bandits if they're cared for will go on alot longer than that. Does The battery turn the engine over fast? If you've got spark and fuel is getting into the cylinders then i'd say your spark isn't strong enough ( what colour spark are you getting?) or the engine isn't truning over fast enough for it to fire. Personally i'd try a new battery then if that doesn't cure it start looking at other possibilities.
Just thought, was it kept outside while it wasn't being used?

Two weeks isn't long to have not run, they can understandably be reluctant if not run (say) all winter.
You need to check the basics - got a spark, fuel getting into cylinder with plug out?
Think about cut-out switches on clutch and sidestand.
Probably a damp related problem IMO

sounds like the clutch switch or simular as stated. Does it turn over atall when you press the starter?

I had the same sort of problem on my bandit. All it was for me was a wire had come out of the bottom of the ignition barrel.

I ended up taking it to the mechanic and felt a little bit embarrassed.

hope this might help hours of tearing your hair out.

I had a similar (or possibly the same) problem with mine a couple of days ago. Hadn't been used for a week or so. Tried starting till the battery went flat, tried bumping, and although it sounded like it was trying to go, it just couldn't quite fire up.

In the end I just jumped it from the car, took about 5-10 mins of continuous attempts, but eventually it caught and came alive again.

My feeling is that the fuel had either dried up in the float bowls, or it had developed an air block somewhere and couldn't draw the petrol in quickly enough. Or, it didn't like being left alone for so long and was just a bit grumpy with me.

It's been fine since and starts on the button everytime.

Anyway, try jumping it from a car if you have one and keep trying, it should fire eventually, and when it does it'll be fine.

Bandits can be a b**ger to start even after a short layoff, the fuel in the carbs evoporates quite quickly. Try starting with the fueltap on prime normally helps.

hey guys sorry for the late reply, still no look, didnt explain fully:

bike has now been sat for a month..... it just wont start, tried bumping it again on a full charge (no luck) taken ht leads off plugs and top of cylinder head where the plugs sit is slightly damp, cleaned and dried it to no avail...

spark is blue when charged and when i turn her over for a few seconds there is a loud bang 2 or 3 times out of the exhaust.....

has been sat there OUTSIDE unfortunately through winter, no other option Sad has been fully polished and sprayed to protect as best i can....

other thing is i have just learned that i should have drained the fuel from the tank and the carbs but didnt no that before....

so old fuel in bike......

think next thing to do is new plugs, new batery, change oil, and fuel and remove carbs to clean....?

cheers for the help guys!

oh the bike is also restricted for another couple of months so should i take the restrictors out to start her then when shes running fine, put them back in or would i need to re balance the carbs for that?

If you have got a nice blue spark , id be trying a bit of easy start.
Had to use it on my 600 after it was stood for about 3 months, once it fired on the easy start it picked up and ran fine.

have you got to be careful with easystart so you dont knock the bottoms out of the cylinder?

Mine was stood for 2month and started first time with prime on Thumbs Up

Have you tried it with prime on? to fill the carbs with fuel will help it start easier

Easy start if you use to much doesn't compress so well and will pre ignite causing pinking or knocking or w/e. Just a couple of squirts into the air box will do fine and will help. Make sure the battery is charged as it will help if the engine is being turned over quickly! I wouldn't worry about doing damage to the engine though, it will be fine.

IIRC up in on, horizontal is prime and down is reserve Thumbs Up

Its a vacuum so it cannot be turned off

Plus check if your choke cable has snapped, as if it had it would be hard to start in this cold weather Thumbs Up

Well there is no point in putting petrol in one cylinder....

Are you sure your carbs are set up correctly? if you are getting a backfire when trying to start thats usually indicative of too much fuel.

Have you not got any mates who are a bit handy with engines?

yer theres a few of us workin on it atm...
an tbh apart from me they all no a little about engines!
we are all baffled.....

i no i only put it in the 1 cylinder after to see if i could just get 1 fired up, as i believe that can sometimes help???

maybe not...
anyway thinking of just poppin it into a local service garage and biting the bullet and probably fixing the hole in my pocket that this is gonna cost..... Crying or Very sad
