I'm 17 no ncb and am looking for a 33bhp legal bike restricted or unrestricted and have come to the conclusion that the bike i am interested in are as follows;

Honda VFR 400 nc30
Honda BROS 400
Suzuki gsxr 400
Honda cbr 400
Kawasaki zx 400 (is that the name?)
Bandit 6
gs 500e and gs500s
gpz500

What i want to know is what would be the cheapest bike to get on the road, i mean to buy, insure, tax, mot, maintain.

Any help appreciated.

If you want cheap wheels, and are not fussed about style, buy a superdream, generally reliable (if looked after a bit), will do 85-90, dirt cheap to insure, cheap parts abound. You should be able to pick up a runner off ebay for £2-300, up to £500 for a mint one, less for a fixer upper.

Well being pedantic its a bit like a larger CB125T, but yes its an ugly cheap thing.

CB250RS is a similar kinda thing but a bit more fun. I had one, quite liked it.

Out of your list there the GS500 would be the best of the bunch.

A superdream is a 250 parallel twin, the 125 version is I believe called a cb125. This is a 250 superdream there is also a (rarer)400 superdream which is a good tool.

HK, nice isn`t it? (stolen from google)

FYI there are currently 6 superdreams on Ebay, the most expensive being a 400, at £360 odd (but the reserve hasn`t been met), there are 3 currently less than £50.

I'd say check out insurances first, that will be the most expensive thing (apart from buying the bike) but i would probably base my decision on that.

I would expect the cheapest insurance will be TPO on a Bros 400, and this bike will also be cheaper as it is not needing to be restricted so thats money saved. Also better as not a high chance of being nicked. Thumbs Up

Of your list the Bros will be the cheapest, but you will get bored of it quickest and don't have the option to take your restrictors out.

While it will cost more than the superdream, if you get an ok one the handling etc will be a bit more 'modern'.

Hi

Superdreams actually seem to be going up in value these days!

I had a CB400NC Superdream as my first bike after my test (the speedo under read compared to most things, as I found following a friend at 89mph when he was doing 105mph). It was also sheep proof.

As to the question I would expect a GS500 to be the cheapest to get on the road, with the Bros and GPZ500 being either just as cheap or possibly slightly more expensive.

All the best

Keith
