Just bear with me on this one......... Embarassed

If 'not anything' = nothing..........

........the question becomes "is something becoming nothing (yet)?"

I reckon it's a maybe or a depends! Confused

Thanks for that, please carry on................. Thumbs Up

But is there anything that can be legitimately described as "not anything"?

I have a feeling that it will depend on your definition of 'legitimately not anything'. Legitimate being physical and tangible, metaphorical and psychological, both or perhaps none of the above? Confused

If you're talking physics then I think that the answer will be no. If we get into the "cerebral" then I think that there might be scope for maybe!

No, because the very fact of it being 'anything' means it is no longer 'not anything'.

It boils down to the difference between thinking of nothing and not thinking. It is not possible to think of nothing, because by thinking of nothing you are actually thinking of something. It is only possible to have a clear and empty mental state by not thinking.

Quite!! Confused

The best you can say is AFAIK nothing doesn't exist, as at this moment in time it cannot be proven to exist with the skills and tools we currently have at our disposal. It does not however, mean that nothing cannot exist.

Like I said 'maybe' Confused

Hahaha!! Eight ball said a definitive YES!! Mr. Green

I think it's important to distinguish between a localised 'nothing' and a global one. Obviously there can never have been a global nothing, otherwise we wouldn't be here. A localized one though...I guess even the space in a perfect vacuum could be said to contain 'dark matter' or something equally esoteric.

Depends on what you see as "nothing".

I see "nothing" as something that doesn't need to be exact to definition to be able to use the word. I won't make sure there isn't a single molecule left in my cup before I say "There is nothing in my cup".

More psychobabble from Hetzer. Shocked.

I think, therefore I am. That's me sorted then, can't be 100% sure about anyone else.

"Nothing" means nothing, doesn't it? Or are we talking about an impure concept here?

Going off track anyway, I was going after infinity. Laughing

It was your question, so I rather made the assumption that it would naturally be an impure concept!! Confused Given that the definition of something cannot really be itself, I think that "nothing means nothing" as a statement is flawed! However, I'd take a guess that if you keep going into 2011 as you are exiting 2010, the answer is probably!!

Ok, the definition of nothing is the absense of anything. Wink

New year's eve, I'd forgotten. Bollocks, I'll be here on my own. Oh well, business as usual then. Laughing
