Yes, I know it's still 2010, so sue me. No shots from me in this first post, but the first week's theme for the 52 is "Light".

Remember the photo must be taken between 1 - 7 January, please also leave the EXIF attached to the image and try to go no larger than 800px on the longest side or the page will become unmanageably large. Laughing

I wish you all a happpy new year and hope you have a great 2011. I'm sure we'll see some great shots in here as always.

The results of last year's thread, 941 replies, and circa 41k views. Lets see if we can beat that in 2011.

Yeah, but that's boring. Of course you can revisit places and whatever, but the point is to challenge yourself and grown as a photographer.

You're only cheating yourself. Laughing

This sounds like a good idea. I’m happy to commit to thinking about probably taking part.

I'll dust off my basic digi cam and get some pictures of light things over the next couple of days.

Since it is now the 1st and the theme for the first week is light I give you some bang bangs taken outside using my basic digi thingy. I dont have a top of the range camera like lots of the guys on here. Its just a basic samsung with a zoom and some features but it does me and I get the odd great pic. These were taken with the ASR and no flash for the extra exposure to make the pics all the prettier.

I have to say I can't see how using a flash would have made much difference.....

On the smaller digital cameras whether the flash is on or not affects the shutter speed, so having the flash on taking photos of fireworks would mean less light getting in, meaning 'thinner' streaks coming out behind the fireworks and a generally less interesting photo.

This. I attempted taking pics of fireworks on the 5th november with and without the flash. Without the flash the camera registers as a low light setting and extends the exposure time to compensate.

Bazza, I have a tripod for the camera but sadly it was left in Belfast. Keep meaning to pick another one up but for all I use the camera it isnt worth paying much for one.

The GF and I discussed getting me an SLR style camera but I just couldnt justify the expense. It would get used no more than the digi one I have now.

I very much wanted to join in with this thread last year, but felt overwhelmed by all the clever professional stuff. However, this year I've decided to get brave and have a go. I don't do New Year Resolutions, but each year decide to tackle something new to learn and perhaps taking a decent picture wil be the 2011 thing.

I'm starting out with a little point and shoot Pentax W90 that I take every where with me, as it's pretty much indestructable and was bought for taking my off road trail biking. It has a macro function which is what has whet my appetite, so here is my week 1 interpretation of Light.

The little solar garden bug light Santa gave me! Mr. Green

I've decided to try and stick with the one subject so I can learn by concentrating on one thing at a time! I will try taking some shots of it at dusk as it lights up, providing of course there is enough daylight to charge it. It's been overcast here today but I'm hoping that sometime this week I will have an opportunity!

Meh, surely the fireworks would be so far away for the camera's light meter would essentially ignore the flash and expose the same anyway?

Or are the small digital cameras really crude?

No. With the flash running the camera takes the picture at normal frame rate. This I didnt want. Without the flash it registers the low light and no compensation (flash) and keeps the shutter open giving me the streamer effect.

amidoingitright?

Bought me a Fujifilm Finepix S2100HD...

Quite decent for a wee camera, would be better with a manual focus on it but can't really complain for the price.

This is what i came up with.

That's unusual for Fuji - you sure?

edit:
Apparently it does.... man that sucks.

Got an old fuji somewhere that has 15 seconds shutter. (or thereabouts)
