Been after some chickens for a while and this morning an entire set up was listed on gumtree for £50!!

couldnt say no to that. Have spent the afternoon fox proofing the end of the garden. Cant wait to pick them up in the morning!

Anyone out there keep chickens? Got any hints or tips to keep the cluckers happy?

My mum had chickens, 1 managed to flap its wings enough to get over the fencing, it was quickly dispatched by her jack Russell, bit a hole in the birds chest!

So Yeh make sure its high enough or stick some netting over the top!

My girlfriend has chickens, they have great little personalities.

They will eat anything, poop a bit much but you get nice eggs out of it. Great pets to keep,

I have had them for over a year.

I suspect they were sold cheap because of the fact that they make a lot of mess.

You have to keep digging out the poop because surprisngly they do it a lot, but they also do eat absolutely anything.

Feed them some of their egg shells. Boss had some trouble with his daughters chickens. You'd go in the pen to collect the eggs just to find some yoke, apparently they eat the shells to keep their calcium levels up.
Double up any netting you have, the fox that killed some at work got through one layer and managed to slide the hutch door open. Basically make the pen like fort nox, or basil will soon get them.

You can clip their wings which just involves trimming the flight feathers on one wing only, that will help stop them flying out of the garden.

If that's your garden it isn't fox-proof by the way.

Foxes will be your biggest problem by far and if your birds aren't secure it can cause a lot of heartache as once they're in they will kill the lot.

I got complacent and lost a couple to a fox in broad daylight, saw it from my kitchen window and it had killed them by the time I got out there.

So after spending £50 on chickens, and a further £200 fox proofing the end of the garden. 2 weeks later I am presented with this...

They have made awesome pets, and are so inquisitive. When funds allow it im going to get a larger coop and have 4 more!
