It started yesterday. You can watch yesterday's highlights on Eurosport at 7pm followed by the bivouac live at 7:30 and then today's highlights at 10pm.

Post your ramblings here.

It's a huge shame that the bikes are now all piddly 450s but I'll still be glued to it like I am every year. God I wish they'd go back to Africa.

Isn't it due to go back next year or the year after?

That's the first I've heard of it. Even if it does become 'official' I wouldn't take their word for it until the race actually started, given that the last one was cancelled after most people had already gone through scrutineering.

They had an article in TBM about it with a back to back ride of a KTM 690 Rallye and a 450 rally prototype.

The 450 was lacking in the significant grunt of the 450, which of course is what you want for the desert, especially with big-power cars to keep out of the way of; but was noticably more agile and more enduro-like.
Could be an interesting base for a new adventure bike; a reliable pretty lightweight 450 with big tanks and still a reasonable amount of power.

Oh and have to keep an eye out for some old 690 ralleys going cheap too Razz.

I wonder if they made any rules on turbos or 2 strokes?
A 450cc (turbo charged? Razz) 2 stroke could be interesting and still be fairly light, even presuming making it pretty tough for longevity.

Some years ago, believe there was a 400cc dakar bike. Very rare and don't think it did amazingly.

The initial consequence has been the involvement in rally-raids of many constructors capable of competing for the leading places, such as Yamaha, Honda, BMW, Aprilia or Sherco, in addition to KTM.

I wonder what they'll do if KTM continue to win on their 450?

So Carlos Sainz had to wear his co-drivers helmet. Who had previously thrown up in it. Pale

1 rider already crashed into the crowd.

Good point, though it doesn't change the fact that ASO have completely screwed over KTM with this rule change. They're competing to win the main race and privateers won't be of too much concern. G's got a good point, if the orange bikes keep winning it'll be funny to see what they come up with next.

The whole thing seems like another example of a rights holder/event organiser cutting their nose off to spite their face. The 690s were not too quick, they were exactly the right tool for this kind of racing and other manufacturers should have stepped up their game.

Say... if they can do Dakar (whatever flavour) on 450s, why do you need anything bigger between your thighs?

Agreed Dom. Even the twonk Carlton Kirby mentioned that some of the Elite riders were having trouble with the lower horsepower. Altitude will add to the loss so to speak.
Braking issues were also mentioned. Why?

Do you have trouble walking in a straight line with such a large chip on your shoulder? This is rally raid, it should be about racing the quickest most powerful machines available on the toughest terrain there is.

As for what I do or don't 'need', I'd sign up to a Prius owners forum if I wanted to spend my time justifying owning a quick/powerful bike.

Ah, I'm only tweaking your. I agree that $YOUR_BIKE_CAPACITY is the best sized engine, and that anyone who buys something other than $YOUR_BIKE_CAPACITY is a pansy boy who could never go as fast over genuinely rough terrain as a bike with $YOUR_BIKE_CAPACITY, the only capacity of champions. Thumbs Up

Hang on, you brought all of this up, not me. My point is that the switch from the 690s to 450s is an entirely negative one designed solely to inconvenience KTM. Nobody else had mentioned road bikes once until you turned up. Evidently you have some kind of complex about big bikes but that's between you and your psychiatrist, I'm not about to get into an argument on the subject.

People ride around the world on 40mph c90s, why does anyone (aka you) need more than that?

And yes, it's kinda sad - KTM put a load of money in to making an excellent tool for the job. So instead of seeing how they could get other people to make even better machines, they cut the limit down to so that people can use unsuitable machines they already had.

I wonder if it might have gone differently if they hadn't taken out the big twins to try and hinder KTM previously - on paper the HP2 is pretty similar to the KTMs. Though of course BMWs money got spent on ewan and thingy, while KTM's got spent on making good bikes Rolling Eyes.

My personal choice of dirt bike for fun is a 144 or 200; however that doesn't mean monster machines don't have their place and it's sad that one company excelling means the sport is penalised.

[Eurosport in background]
Just heard that a competitor in the 2000 Cairo Dakar came into the timing station with a swollen arm....was asked by the medics if he was retiring...No he said and opened up his arm with a scalpel and fitted a catheter before racing off again.

Loving the coverage, good to see KTM taking the restrictions in their stride!

Going pretty well too judging by that shot of it flying past the mitsi. It seems like only a couple of years back that the lancers were right at the top, I guess it just shows how quickly development moves forward.

Bit of a shame to see Robby Gordon out as the Hummer's usually fun to watch in the quick bits. I wonder if he'll give in and go for a conventional 4x4 setup at some point.

It sounds like it nearly turned into a one horse race for the bikes with Despres' engine nearly going bang. Good old KTMs eh. Razz

Just watching it properly and didn't really watch it last year.

While I was disappointed to see the 'Paris Dakar' in entirely the wrong place; I think it actually is a more suitable location!
The latin-american people are showing their typical enthusiasm for such things and you feel maybe fully appreciate it a bit more than many of the countries (European and African) that it did previously pass through.
