I know, I know... Another question on 'which bike'. Give me the grief if you want to but I'll get over it.

Story goes...

My cousin has just turned 16 and needs a bike to get him around town and to work. He asked me, but due to me only deciding to get into bikes at 18 years old I don't know any 50cc bikes. I have recomended the DNA as my brother once had a DNA 180 and found it fun and also the RS50 as thats all I know off. He doesn't want a scooter, would prefer sports but if needs must a crosser will do. Any ideas? I advised him not to go over £1000.

He doesn't want a scooter. He said he would rather get a bus pass then a scooter.

Well he won't want a DNA then as they're scooters which are trying to look like a proper bike and failing.

I would say to get an unfaired geared bike, such as something like the DT50 or TS50. You can pick good examples up for just a few hundred quid from place like Ad Trader and if he looks after it he won't have to sell it for much less than he pays. Unfaired bikes will cope a lot better with stuff like when he drops it and general learning. Having a geared one is a good idea as if he goes up on get a 125 bike and then a bigger bike he has had a learning advantage over someone who has been on a twist and go. Don't spend much really as one which costs a few hundred will be just as useful to learn on but won't cost much when it is dropped.

Hope this is of help. Thumbs Up

Cheers Ste, I'll get him to look in auto trader this week. Only problem is he wants me or his dad to ride it back from wherever he buys it, and I don't want to ride at 30mph for too far. Twisted Evil

Bike Trader as well, but won't be much choi in there really of cheap 50cc unfaired bikes within reasonable distance.

You should quite easily be able to find one within a reasonable distance of you to be easy to ride home at 30mph.

Also worth knowing that it's probably not a good idea to get one which goes on etc about it being derestricted and being able to go 50mph or whatever. Chances are it's been thrashed to death moreso than normal. Not a big issue him getting one which is derestricted (as long as he is happy about it, and does know the full story on what he is doing and all the legal risks as well. Again don't bother even looking at one which has lots of aftermarket tuning parts. Road legal exhausts systems are okay as quite reasonable and almost expected as exhaust pipes rust and if it's got holes a lot easier and more possible to get a new exhaust which is an aftermarket one. Don't read too much into stuff like mini indicators or whatever, but aftermarket parts don't really add anything to the value of a machine so don't let them try and give that as a reason why it's expensive and why they don't want to haggle. Bog standards is best, as if he wants to fit aftermarket stuff then fine, but it's his choice, and a bike will sell more easily if it can be sold as a standard bike for the same reasons.

Thumbs Up

Aprilia RX50, nifty little bikes, but I'd rather wait another year and get a 125, never bothered with a 50 myself.

The way i look at it, if the bike looks shit hot and costs a fortune, or if it looks crap and cost a pittance, you are still stuck with 50cc, L plates and a 30mph top speed. No matter what you get, you will hate it, and how slow it is, so why blow thousands on a bike? just get a crappy 50, ride it till your 17 then get a proper bike!

I would recommend a derbi senda, (as i always do) they're not like the expensive race reps which cost more to insure and crash. The traille style is easy on crashes and doesn't cost too much to insure.

and in all honesty when derestricted they are about as quick as a race rep. Smile

Let us know what he gets, I know someone who'll be in the same position next year Thumbs Up

But they look rancid Sick

I would probably choose a cheap old crosser Smile an RS50 is pretty crap in my opinion, if you are going to splash out on a little race rep you may as well get a 125, at least they go at a semi decent speed Smile

Usually I woul agree but he lives in the middle of no-where so he could do with something to get him around. Currently he needs to walk to where he works which takes around an hour.

More info on moto-roma 50cc stuff on this link
https://www.barrus.co.uk/products.php?sectionid=68
and info on Motohispania on this link
https://www.barrus.co.uk/products.php?sectionid=100 - both moto and race stuff

HTH Smile

P.S. I see the Barrus site also has the Malaguti Ducati Corsa paddock bike. OK, it is a scooter but possibly the nearest thing to a Ducati a 16yr will be able to get (and many of us older ones for that Confused ). There looks like a good insurance deal on it too Smile

The RS50 is a very nippy 50cc, it's not made of glass and they don't break as easily as people say they do.

I agree with Ste on this one: get a ts50 or dt50: my m reg suzuki ts50 was £550 and i sold it for £500. it did the job: i got an aprilia rs50 afterwards, fell off it and instantly knocked a couple of hundred off its value: the ts50s etc are bombproof and after all, who keeps a 50cc for more then a year: its merely a stepping stone to a bigger bike or car

and dont spend hundreds giving it a full racing exhaust or 70cc big bore kit: its pointless and you will never get your money back.

hope this helps

Honda MT50 - 100-400 quid, fast acceleration with a good port clean, cheaper insurance.
