Quote:
Biltong is a 400 year old traditional mildly spiced, salted and air dried meat product from South Africa. The word comes from Dutch with ‘BIL’ meaning buttock and ‘TONG’ meaning strip. It has been produced and eaten for hundreds of years yet it is still enjoyed by many South Africans and remains very much a part of the countries heritage.

Biltong is a meat product that has been cured to make it last for long periods without it going ransid. There are typically two main types of biltong, beef and Game biltong. Beef is the most commonly used meat for making biltong, and therefore, the most readily available.

I ordered some Kudu, Beef and Springbok Very Happy

Fuck, you can get kudu!! When I was on expedition in Namibia a local Boer rancher invited us round and he roasted one on a spit in his back yard. Might order some of this and reminisce ...

For all you wild eaters out there, I recommend Chakalaka restaurant in Putney, and there is also one in South Wimbledon.

This is a south african resuarant where you can try

Crocodile
Springbok
Kudu
Ostrich

and some others too. I forget.

What's you weird food list? Mine is:

Crocodile
Springbok
Kudu
Ostrich
Whale
Horse
Puffin
Goat (does this count?)
Moose

Snails
Frogs (legs)

If anyone can beat that last one, i've got a shiny pound here for them.

Thumbs Up

I had smoked salmon for the first time over christmas, was lovely.

Not really gone adventurous with meat due to the exotic stuff costing so much but i'd love to try croc and snake.

Have had biltong and jerky etc though.

Croocodile used to be quite a common meat in papua new guinea - we visited a 'crocodile farm' a couple of times where they breed them.

Also stayed at a Kangaroo farm in Australia.

Anyway, look what arrived in the post this morning Smile ...

I have a SA shop and kitchen near me that makes and packages the stuff for resale. I can manage to eat a fivers worth on the way home! Damn I love the Biltong.

Talking of weird things to eat, as a chrimbo pressie to the wife I have booked us a table at the following:

https://www.archipelago-restaurant.co.uk/archipelago_restaurant_alacarte.html

They also specialise in choco insects!

Boiled chick head... They'd removed the beak. That was it. Worst thing I've ever eaten, I'll be honest. Chewed it for some time, eyes and brain popping and ball of fibre-y bone just... no.

Would rather rim my old man than eat that again.
