Whenever my connection becomes unbearably slow and complaing to the ISP and BT have no effect whatsoever, I usually turn the router off overnight. When it's turned back on, it's miraculously quicker.

This is BT thing - if they notice you have a bit of a wobbly connection they'll try and downgrade you to a slower but more stable connection speed. This can get compounded over time so you end up with a really shite speed. Turning it off for over 6 hours means that when the router is switched back on, your line resgisters the full connection speed. Might not work for you but worth a try.

Who you with? Mine has been utterly diabolical since Jan 1st for no reason at all, always dropping out, piss poor speeds.

It's been a cracking service with next to zero downtime for over 3 years. (Which is just as well because tech support is office hours only).

Now its driving me nuts. Something has definately 'occured' change of policy or some switch has been thrown.

login to your router when the speed is kak

go to the status or admin page whichever one tells you the SNR and attenuation.

You will be on an unbundled exchange or LLU, you will be on a profile something like SN6I24 (signal noise 6decibels, Interleaved, 24mbs)

If the SNR on your router is showing less than 6 it will be unstable and will drop the connection if it goes below this (higher slower profiles like 9db 12db etc means you can have more noise but slower sync speeds)

seeing as you have A connection even if its a kak one might mean a fault on your line so if the exchange has monitoring on it will drop as low as it can to ensure sync with your router.

If sky pass you to second line support they should ask you for the SNR and attenuation from above.

High attenuation can mean a fault as can low SNR.

Hmm this might sound strange, i had issues with broadband with AOL and their 2nd level tech was on about a customer they had on a farm and it was the equipment/generators interfering with the line, creating too much noise, it only has to be close to the line that connects you to the exchange for the problem to effect you.

Don't get me started with Sky, the fuckers cancelled my broadband for no fucking reason
This was in the 2nd week of december as well.

As of now, they still can't give me a fucking reason why they turned it off. I said I'm going to oftel about this as it just not on and hanged up the phone. 10 minutes later I get a call from the wankers saying sorry and all that crap.

But hey I got a £50 credit from them and two months free when it back on.... but thats like in two weeks.

So next step is to check if they bill me for the time it's off... if they they do, it's another call.... luckly I don't use there fucking 0845 numbers

We get a lot of problems with BB here, been down to 8kbps download several times.... we've had 5 engineers out and because the problem is intermittent they don't do a lot.

One thing we have noticed though is there is a lot of crackling, buzzing and hissing on the line when it rains, and the engineers have allegedly replaced everything from the pole to the exchange, done nothing from the house to the pole though.

When the speed drops, have a listen to the phone and see if it sounds clear

If you only have 1 socket this should be pretty easy.


Basically you have the phone socket where the phone plugs in.

you also have the connector where the line comes into the house.

I assume yours is a telegraph pole so look for a black wire coming into the house.

from there you should be able to see a small oblong box, that's where the BT line meets your inhouse line to the master socket. You can open this and remove the orange and white wire, this will take the power off any bell wires in the house.

Make sure!!! You check your line still works after removing this wire, again you only need 2 wires to run BB and voice (2 and 5)

You will get the same effect by removing the bell wire from your only socket but I would think its best to remove the interference from the source.

Just make sure you tape up the wire out of the way and only remove 1 at a time and retest the router.

should only take 5 minutes and should make a difference.


As for getting a new socket, check gumtree for ex BT engineers, technically (well actually) its illegal for someone to change a master socket type BUT fuck it they would only know if you completely knackered the line
