I have just read somerset scratchers post (made a while ago i think) about him being pissed off about being on a scooter, well i have come to the conclusion that on a 125 with l plates, the plates could be used as a wind up, i would let people try to overtake me going 30 then rip the throttle back and beat them, then making them realise you are not stuck at 30 and can actually go 80/85/90 and 0-60 quicker than them ( speaking 'them' as most cars).

Does anyone else ever use the fact that they have 'L' plates to their advantage when trying to wind up car drivers who are up their arse? Twisted Evil

I get the odd boy racer idiot in his nova/scooby/chavmobile with no badges on at all (cos badges are just so un cool nowadays aren't they!!! - heaven forbid that their car was made by a MANUFACTURER Shocked !! ). The L plates on the bike seem to convince them that the NSR can't possibly do 90+ Laughing .

I love when they overtake you and their mates in the passanger seats laugh at you, i think because of the 2 stroke sound they laugh like you are on a ped, then we see red and fight back, overtaking them, i love to see their faces.

When I had the L's on my NSR and was having a bit of a tear, I would often get looks from pedestrians, scooters and other bikes. I think a de-restricted 125's performance surprises most people. It's definitely worth 'demonstrating' the performance of your bike to see peoples reactions for a laugh! Thumbs Up

Another thing i like to do is give ped bois a chance, let them think they are good then blast off.

I have often wondered how many weird looks you would receive tearing around on a Gixxer, R1, zx9r and the likes, with L plates on. And how many chavs would even be stupid enough to try. Rolling Eyes

As far as I know it's illegal to ride on a vehicle fitted with L plates if you don't need them. I'mn fairly sure, although not 100% so you might still be in with a hope Wink .

Just one of those things I think, as they want them to be able to be used for identifing actual learner and thus would be pointless if people randomly drove around with them.

So how do you explain all the driving school cars with stickers and headboards being allowed to go around with only one person in them? Confused

- are those with instructor certificates except? Can anyone clarify?

They're just used to indicate a new driver so that people can be slightly more expectant of any new driver errors. Don't think there are any rules behind how long ago you must have passed your driving test to be allowed to use them, but could be wrong. Would say good to use when you're not a confident driver.

So, the Highway Code says should - I thought if its a law it says must, whereas should indicates a recommendation.

They mean nothing as such in law but people use them to indicate they are a new driver. I wouldn't bother with them as people would just use them as a tool against you if you ever had an insurance claim. In Ireland there are plates for newly qualified drivere that they must display for a year (I think they are an R-plate) which means they aren't allowed to go over 45mph.

Displaying proper L-plates if you have a full licence is fineable by up to £40 IIRC.

Two strokes of any size are good for that sort of wind-up. My mate ran his air cooled RD250 up against a Vauxhall Corsa Ned-mobile at a Crail run-wot-you-brung day and whooped their asses good and proper in a cloud of strawberry flavoured smoke. All the funnier because they had been sat on the line with the window down giving him abuse about running 'that old piece of shit' whilst waiting for the christmas tree Laughing Cool

There is an exemption in law for driving school cars.

I'm not sure of the exact figures, but they are pretty rapid for a 25 year old bike, there is nothing to them so the power to weight ratio is pretty high. I do know you are not allowed them on a restricted licence even though they only generate 30bhp.

If you are interested there is some datalogging from a period german review of the bike on the Nurenburgring, it is in German (predictably) HERE
