I know its hard to tell with out the pictures but I have a half size leaver above my clutch leaver. Does any body know what this is for . I tried to follow it back but get lost in doing that. When I riding if I pull it in it makes the bike almost die out. So I know it does some think but I just don't know what. Any one any ideas ??

i think its something like a decompression lever. makes it a tad easier to kick start???

Hi

What bike is it? Older Aprilias had the choke lever there (and a fair few other bikes which shared the same switchgear did as well). Could also be a decompressor (common on big singles). And if an old bike a manual ignition timing adjuster is a possibility.

I would agree with the above post.

But until we know what bike you got, then it is pure speculation.

It is a husky te 410 2000 reg. How does a decompresion leaver work then what hold it while I kick over or pump it. ? Please explain. Thanks.

pull in "a bit" while you kick it. takes a bit off pressure of the whole pain in the ass of starting a husky 410. also stops it launching you back into the air. he never really got the hang of it..

Hmm, interesting. how does a decompression lever work? Does it open a valve in the head or something? I've never come across one before...

It allows you to ease the engine over compression when kick-starting without giving yourself a hernia.

A big single will start best with the engine just over top dead centre.

You kick it over gently until the engine is up to compression, pull in the decompressor then push the kickstart a little further so the engine goes just past the compression point. It should now be sat with the engine right on the "sweet spot" for starting with one kick without spitting back.

On a lot of big singles, there is so much compression that you can stand on the kickstart when it is at TDC. Getting it over compression would require you to actually jump on the kickstart (as is the case with my Enfield Bullet if you don't use the decompressor). Doing this potentially results in a vicious kickback where the engine fires backwards and sends the kickstart back in the direction it came with considerably more force than was originally used to press it.

There is admittedly a certain satisfaction about being able to give it enough of a boot to send the engine over compression and into life without using the decompressor. Looks good to onlookers having both feet off the ground as you crash down onto the kickstart with your full weight and the engine roars into life but if it spits back, you can land up looking like a fool (and in a fair degree of pain, people have broken ankles before).

Some open a small valve in the head. Most modern ones press down on the exhaust valve, opening it slightly.

Actually, most decompressors these days are automatic, they are operated by a cable running from the kickstart and you don't even know you are using it.

All this takes me back a bit (40 years) to when I had a 500 single Velocette. Superb bike - but starting, humph! Allow 20 mins on a good day and be prepared for the bugger to kick back hard.

Some also use a spring loaded centrifuge on the exhaust cam that lifts the exhaust valve slightly off it's seat at very low revs and automatically allows it to close completely once the engine builds up revs.

On my kickstart DR350 the starting sequence used the decompression lever like this.

Pull the decompression lever in until it clicked (lever stays in).

Prod kickstarter in short movements until the decompression lever suddenly snapped back into it's open position.

Use kickstart in one large movement to start bike.

If the bike had crashed or been upside down then the decompression lever could be held in, the throttle held wide open and the kickstart pushed easily through 3 or 4 complete sweeps. This would clear any flooding and make the bike start as if it hadn't just been laying on top of you in a ditch.
