Hey if anyone has any advice on mod 2 it would be cool if you could give me any pointers or things not to do. I passed my theory and mod 1 and CBT (cbt was when i was 16) doing my restricted test as im only 17. The winter forced my mod1 to be cancelled 3 times so Im really hoping i pass (next friday). Anyways if anyone has any tips that would be real nice as im kinda stressin'! Thanks. Barney

Look at all the road signs,
keep to the correct speed,
always move your head to check your mirrors,
and keep your right foot on the pedal,
use bus lane when possible (i.e. the correct times)

oh and try not to crash would help :p

There's loads of threads about mod 2s here as well

I'd suggest you research and read up A LOT. and then on the day, relax, shut up and trust yourself. Be confident, it'll put you in a more relaxed mindset and it'll also show the examiner that you're able to ride a bike, they can sometimes tune out if they think "ah well he's doing alright". if you keep making bad manoeuvres and hesitating and looking unsure, they'll have a hawk eye on you.

Enjoy traffic. Time spent sitting there doing nothing is time well spent on a test. There's 30 minutes of test to get through. If you spend 29 of them sitting stationary in a traffic jam and make no mistakes in the other minute, they HAVE to pass you. Don't filter, it's too easy to make someone change direction/speed for you (instant fail).

Make sure you leave a gap for cars to get into/out of side streets if you're stopped for lights etc.

Read the road a head. look forward, as far as you can see. further than you think you should be looking. seriously, look up.

OSPSL approaching junctions

O - Observation, Double mirror check and your first lifesaver (left shoulder if turning left, right if turning right). Carry these out in a sweeping motion. i.e- left manoeuvre: right mirror, left mirror, left lifesaver

S - Signal, indacate.

P - Position. Move over to whichever side of the road is closest to the direction you're planning on turning (right turning right, left turning left) this stops people coming up the inside of you.

S - Speed. Slow down

L - Lifesaver. Final lifesaver about 5/10 metres from the junction.

Make sure you start your checks and procedures early. It's surprising how quickly the junction will creep up on you. Give yourself enough time to not rush them.

KEEP WARM.

The last thing you need to be is cold as well as nervous.

Keep yourself wrapped up wam and you'll find it a lot easier than if you are shivering your nuts off.

I was VERY uncomfortable. I was freezing and soaked through. It poured like i've never seen before, the test after mine was cancelled due to the heavy rain... and i wasn't wearing anything waterproof at all. Jeans and a leatherette jacket with trainers.

Maybe the examiner took pity Laughing

Heh, I rode through a blizzard and turned up covered head to foot in snow - I think I got a "well, he made it here" pass.

Watch out for tricky junctions. They'll try and take you through an unmarked crossroads (treat as a give way), a multiple roundabout or similar. Slow and cautious in, lots of head-turn observations, then confident and sharpish out.

If you can shake off the examiner (while not exceeding the speed limit), even better. They can't fail you on what they don't see.

You know there's now a 10 minute "independent riding" section? You'll be asked to navigate towards a signed destination. It doesn't actually matter if you get there or go off course, it's just to see if you can choose your own route safely without being given turn-by-turn instructions. No problem if you've been riding or driving for a bit: see if you can get yourself stuck in traffic. Wink

Basically a case of chillax and ride as well as you can. Think positive - you can ride, and you will be showin this fact to the examiner.

With OSPSL, I was taught that the first obs is a mirror check, then signal, and a quick lifesaver before you move into Position. Key thing is lifesaver before deviating from 'normal' course.

If you're near the test centre, have a ride around the local area in the few days before the test. The bike school I was with pretty much showed me the test route I took.

Don't get hung up on details. Relax and, dare I say, enjoy it. It will be over real quick.

Lots of research, lots of practice, and if you can afford it get some training. I tried my Mod 2 three times before I decided to get training. Got training then passed on the 4th attempt.

There are a few books you can buy on it but their titles elude me at the moment. Anyone remember them?

Yes, correct, sorry. I was taught to do both. Mirrors then lifesaver, in a sweeping motion. eg: right mirror, left mirror, left lifesaver for a manoeuvre to the left.

I shall correct now Smile

Yeah theres a double roundabout im not liking in my local town (test centre is in the local town ive been riding it for over a year now which is pretty good for me). Ive had my training (camrider) and passed mod 1 with 1 minor. My instuctructor told me that module 2 is easier in his opinion. Ive been taught to mirrors signal look (shoulder check) manouver. One think im not sure about is say im going left at a turning and do my mirrors signal look manouver do i need another life saver to my left? and same for the right? I have an hour or so with my instructor before the test so i guess i can ask him. Ive got leathers and all the thermal stuff so ill make sure i wear my own gear to it, i had to ride 30 miles for my mod1 with jeans and i was bloody freezing.

Try and find out the test routes and familiarise yourself with them as much as possible. Know where all speed changes and stop signs are etc.

Try and stay relaxed and confident, don't put too much pressure on yourself.

Be over cautious with your observations. It's best to check too many times than not enough. Make sure he can see your head moving when you check mirrors, and get your neck right round for shoulder checks.

Never assume you've failed and give up. Keep your effort at 100% until its all over, you never know what you can get away with.

If in doubt, chicken out..... My instructor taught me to ride assertively, not to wait unnecessarily and get up to speed as quick as I could. I did this on my first test and ended up being criticised for being a bit reckless. On the second test I chilled out, didn't go for such narrow gaps and just generally acted a bit more sensible. Worked a treat.

Anyway, good luck, I'm sure you're more than capable of passing. And even if you do fail, it's a great learning experience for the next time. Thumbs Up

I failed my first mod 2, in which I was very nervous, it was perfect except for the last roundabout pulling into the test centre and cut up a micra, knew I would have too too when I saw it in the lane beside me, he said he'd have passed me if I'd have gone round the round about again...

The second test I passed, slim, but I passed it a few minors but just tried to act confident, didn't wait around for the instructor at all until he instructed... me on a tiny ybr and him on a huge examiners bike had to give way sometimes when I could slip through I had to stop and wait for him several times when he asked.

Just remember cancel your indicators, get in the right lane well in time, and if you can't go the wrong way, don't cut anyone up Smile

Good luck!

Yes, you definitely DO have to do the last lifesaver just before you turn
