Planning a World tour, plus registration plate difficulties.

Some friends of mine are planning a world tour motorcycle ride, the part I'm interested in is the leg from New York down to Florida across to California and then down to Chile in South America. I may want to join them.

Regardless my question is this, I'd prefer to buy a bike in the UK and then ship it over to the US, can I ride on UK plates & UK insurance in the US and across South America?

Many of the bikes I'm looking at are a lot cheaper in the UK than in the US from what I can see even with the shipping which is less than £500.

I may even sell the bike in California as I'm not to interested in the South American leg.

if i remember correctly you can for up to 3mnths.then you have to register it in the usa?
